Good video. Of the main Waikiki strip of hotels, the only true 5 star resort is the Halekulani, but it does not have a beach in front of it either, plus the prices are a bit steeper. All of the 1636 rooms in the Sheraton Waikiki were renovated in 2019-2020, so you will get a modern room, the Outrigger Reef is undergoing a reno as well. The Outrigger Waikiki has a great location, but the rooms look dated and tired. The only caution I would have about the Sheraton is that because of the over 1600 rooms, wait times for the elevators can be pretty ridiculous during peak times.

We just stayed at the Outrigger last month. Their renovation was completed at the end of 2022, and our room was great. We stayed in an ocean front room, and the view was spectacular and worth every penny. Plus we loved hearing the music waft up from Duke’s in the evenings. Between Duke’s, Hula Grill, the deli, and a juice bar, we felt we had plenty of options. Also, with the location we could literally walk out of the hotel and find unlimited choices. Overall, a great trip. We did walk down and have dinner in the Sheraton one night though, and I am seriously considering that hotel next trip, along with the Moana Surfrider.

I cannot thank yoiu enough!! Having not ever been to the Royal, I was very excited to try it but I wouldve been so heartbroken had I spent that money and it turned out like you showed! Exactly what we wanted to confirm before choosing between the 2. Stayed at the Sheraton recently and loved it. Found a deal for the Royal Hawaiian that was slightly less than the Sheraton for our next trip but was not sure if we would enjoy it as much as the Sheraton. Thanks!

I went in July 2021. They messed up our reservation and we stayed in the royal Hawaiian suite. The views were amazing and the room was beautiful

Aaaahhhh I have many fond memories. Every Sunday evening they had a luau [Hawaiian banquet]. I was a photographer with my hula girl who posed withh each guest. The floor show was dynamic and well worth seeing.

Thank you for the informative video. I had been looking at the Sheraton, but I need a smoke-free hotel, and the Sheraton allows smoking. One thing to note, as well, is that the Princess Kaiulani hotel across the street from the Moana Surfrider is also a part of the Sister Hotel thing. We stayed there twice before due to budget and all we had to do was walk a block and be able to use the amenities.

As you say, the royal Hawaiian has a great history, and it is fascinating to view, but unfortunately, historic hotels are only pleasant to stay in if they’ve been well maintained and modernized, and Sheraton has decided not to put money in this property with their premier property next-door next to the Sheraton is a hotel which is more than 100 years old that has been well-maintained is very luxurious called The Halekulani. You might want to give it a try and thanks for your video.

Couldn’t disagree with you more! You are comparing two completely different hotels, in spite of both now being part of Marriott Inc. You stay at the Pink Palace for the Hawaiian experience. The Sheraton is pretty much just like any other Sheraton on the mainland, just more expensive. Very little old Hawaii at the Sheraton! If cost is an issue, there are plenty of hotels that are “Mauka”.

I am deciding between Royal Hawaiian (Ive always wanted to go there) and Moana Surfrider. I am taking on my own three 17 year old girls. They will have one room and I will have the other. My daughter thinks the Moana Surfrider looks like more her speed. She isn't a pink girl. what do you think?

We actually split our time in Waikiki last year between the 2. I had always wanted to stay at the Royal Hawaiian as well, but found it underwhelming. It’s nice just a little too laid back and quiet for me. The Sheraton next door and the Moana have a lot more going on, but it’s up to you
