Hi, I took a class in building archtop guitars over the summer and I now have a beautiful unfinished archtop guitar (and no guidance how to finish it / I wok out of a small bedroom in an apartment) .Through much experimentation and research I decided on tru-oil finish. Today (on my sample/experiments) I accidentally scratched one of my samples that was curing for six months with my a very light touch from fingernail making me question the durability of tru-oil. My question is this: Can I put Royal lac over tru_oil? Also, if that is true is it necessary to thin out the Royal lac (as in a French polish) or can I get a perfectly flat shiny coat right out of the can. Thanks so much any any insight you can give me at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks Frederick C

I have no information about the compatibility of these two products - sorry!

I like your presentations, I'm just one that would like to know what it is I am using/breathing. Do you know what the synthetic material is? I can mix shellac with nitro cellulose--gun cotton, but one needs to add gum camphor if your using it in alcohol to Fr.polish, and = a very much tougher shellac type finish, otherwise acetone or acetone based solvents work, but it can not be applied by the Fr. polish method. Nitro cellulose is organic, so it must be related to the finishes in the furniture industry like conversion varnishes with a catalyst. I googled the ingredients, = very bad to breathe and it is practically impossible to not get a whiff while aerating it "Fr.polishing" right under your face unless a respirator and ventilation is present, it is the reasoning for using Ethanol, not Methanol's . It is just that the shellac claim is quite misleading, no?? Aren't you curious.

There is no perfect finish. I try and choose one with the most number of pros and the least number of cons. When spraying always use a respirator, even with water based finishes. I have used Royal Lac and am comfortable using it. Take the precautions you feel are necessary for your situation.

Yes, absolutely! But I/we know for sure what is in the traditional F.P. and no worries there. How is it you don't care about that. I F.P. ten pounds last year on big pianos, imagine breathing all that. Thanks.

@@hampshirepiano6383 I didn't say I didn't care about it. I just said take the precautions you feel are necessary for your situation. Sounds like you should be taking precautions with the amount of work you are doing.

No comments? There is something very fishy "smells" about that lac stuff, one can not find out what that special synthetic resin is? "proprietary" they say. There may be shellac in it but that is not a shellac finish = baloney!
