The soldier telling everyone about soup is supposed to be Augustin Trébuchon, the last French soldier to die before the Armistice. During WW1 there was a dedicated role for French soldiers where they would carry canisters filled with soup. This was honestly one of the most dangerous and thankless jobs you could get. The guys had to run from trench to trench dodging machinegun and artillery fire and if (and that's a big IF) they made it alive, the soup the soldiers got was usually cold and full of mud (and quite possibly some human remains). So I'm really not surprised why someone, who spent months, if not years, in a cold, muddy trench would be so happy to finally eat some warm and fresh soup.

Apparently an American unit was under orders to keep fighting for a few hours and a Congressional investigation happened to find out why those soldiers died. Great video, that’s for the insight! My Granny was a frontline battle nurse during the Warsaw uprising. My Grandfather was a Commodore on an Ukrainian battleship during WWII. Granny always told me, to go first no matter what, cause the sniper will focus on the second person pushing.

The American at 9:22 charging the German roadblock was Henry Gunther. He had been recently demoted and wanted to regain his rank before the war ended. He got promoted, but posthumously.

That actually haoppened. After he took his bow, he put his helmet back on, turned and started heading back to Germany. Can't recall which Brit unit was opposite him, but it is recounted in their war diary.

There were some units fighting in Africa that didn’t hear the news until some weeks later. There was fast communication in the form of telegraphs. The reason why fighting kept up until the end was twofold: The common ground soldiers of both sides were unsure if the news of an armistice was to be trusted, and, particularly with artillery units, they didn’t want to carry everything back home.

Its actually really sad the french soldier was Augustin Trébuchon, he fought in many different battles and died to a very simple mistake, simply telling other people about the war ending! His mistake was showing his face above the bunker which led him to be shot by an enemy sniper 😢

Joseph Persico wrote a very good book on the last day of the war. Several officers insisted on their units fighting until the last second ('we've been planning this for weeks', 'we've almost reached our objective', etc.).. There was a congressional probe, after the war, but the findings were squelched. The book's title is "Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh hour: Armistice Day, 1918 World War One and Its Violent Climax". Kinda depressing and angering, though.

George Edwin Ellison - Britain, was with the BEF from 1914 and participated in the Battle of Mons, belonging to the 5th Irish Lancers. KiA Nov 11th, 1918, 9:30am Augustin Trébuchon - France, joined the fight in 1914, belonging to the 415th Infantry Regiment, he was a messenger, his last message found on his person as he was going down the line was "Muster at 11.30 for food." KiA Nov 11th, 1918, 10:45am. George Lawrence Price - Canada, was conscripted into the 28th Battalion (Northwest), CEF in 1917. While stepping out of a house to follow retreating Germans, he was shot in the chest, pulled into a house by a nurse, he died of his wound shortly thereafter. KiA Nov 11th, 1918, 10:58am Henry Gunther - US, drafted into the 313th Infantry Regiment in 1917 shortly after the US declared war on the Central Powers, arrived into France in July of 1918, a Sergeant at the time, due to a letter that was intercepted to a friend about the state of the war and advising them to avoid being drafted at all costs, he was demoted down to private. On the 11th of November, Gunther's unit was near Meuse. Upon seeing two German machine gun posts, against orders, Gunther rose, fixed his bayonet and charged, with the Germans waving him off, already knowing of the Armistice, no longer wanted bloodshed. Gunther fired possibly a round or two, then when he was within grenade throwing distance. The Germans had no choice but to fire, killing him instantly, 60 seconds from the end of the war. KiA Nov 11th, 1918, 10:59am Although 4,000 Germans also died in those last terrible hours, there has never been a defining record to show who was the last to fall. In total, 10,944 men were casualties of which 2,738 were KiA, all this took place within 5 hours from the beginning of November 11th 1918.

Not many people realize that the last person to die in WWI was an American named Henry Gunther, who did a suicidal bayonet charge by himself into a German machine gun pillbox. According to this, the Germans fired warning shots, but when he kept going they stopped him for good. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Gunther So, given that America was smart enough to wait to join both World Wars, and Henry Gunther here, we Americans can say that we are the smartest *and* the dumbest people on the planet.

During both world wars while everybody was fighting, my great grandfather and my grandfather was just chilling on a mountain in the Phillipines. They had bows and my Great grandmother and grandmother hid in small fox holes under the house. It was actually more a nipa hut or "Kubo".
