A very sad day indeed. I did my band service training in Deal between 1965-69 and loved the place. Very proud, and honoured, to have served as a Royal Marine Bandsman; the discipline, training and musicianship have stayed with me even 1/2 a century later! And a huge Thank You to the Deal Video Camera Club members who recorded this event for prosperity.

My parents lived almost directly opposite the main gates shown in the opening pic. From our first floor window we used to watch the bands practice in front of the building and I was always impressed by the drum major and wanted to be one when I grew up. I was in the marine cadets for a few years before joining the RAF at 16! Deal was a nice garrison town. Woken by reveille and bed when the bugler played last post. Sir Vivian Dunn was the head of the school of music in those days.

I was there that evening in the pouring rain with my Mum and needless to say tears were shed by both of us. A very moving reminder of that very sad day the Royal Marines left Deal.

I played in the band in the 60's, and here in California the weather could be quite drear, but I don't ever recall having had to play in rain such that the spectators needed umbrellas. We would address the effects on our instruments and the resulting sound changes that could occur. I imagine the bands in your spectacle had to have the same discussions. The fortitude and pageantry on display is fantastic.

Hi Alana, when i served in the Royal Marines Band the weather was always taken inconsideration for the same reasons you mentioned. This display went ahead regardless because it was such an important event, ending the Royal Marines association with the small town of Deal.

I was there that night, a great experience. A very moving aspect was the March along The Strand with the eleven gaps in the band where the Bandsmen who were murdered by the IRA should have been.

I remember attending a dress rehearsal of the Marines band at the barracks as a lad. I also remember band members playing in the Colliery brass bands

Amazing film of a Historic Occasion, in atrocious weather conditions. There again the Deal Weather has not always been favourable for the Deal Bandstand Memorial Concerts, in recent years either.
