Wait, I have one of those. Thank you to you and Ted Munk for how to improve my machine. Wowza, what a great thing to know about.

Wonderful typewriter. Wonderful video too.

Joe, I am always amazed by how useful old technology is, sure it’s not a modern Macintosh laptop, or the latest Chromebook, but, after the batteries are no longer usable, this typewriter will be usable long after a Chromebook’s ‘End of Life.’ Well done!

That's a great kit Ted has put together Joe, and your video showed its installation very clearly. Superimposing new soundproofing does make a difference!

I’ve tried measuring sound levels of typewriters before, and you need more than just a dB reading to make sense of it, I think you need to analyze the spectrum itself. Directionality and distance of the mic also makes a huge difference.

Thank you for sharing this Joe. I have an app on my phone that measure the decibel levels and it might have been good to do this before/after, or some typing footage before/after to compare the sound? Even without this I enjoyed this video though!

What a wonderful little Royal, what exactly is it? I know you've featured it before, just like to make sure if I look for it It doesn't appear to be too heavy on the hands or is it Joe? Some Royals like my '68 Aristocrat Special is rather heavy in the hands. Don't want another of those. As for sound deading, it's okay, I perfer the loud clutch given song my machines sing, there's a satisfying pitch to me. But if I ever decide to make them sing softly, I have an understanding on how to go about doing that. Thank you my friend trying to catch up while I wait in bed for my medicine to kick in and I can start my day, si meanwhile I get ny JVC tine in catching up, I vow to watch every video you made! Lol sounds like a threat but what kind would it have been... none lol.

Royal Mercury, made in Japan by Silver-Seiko. One of the better small portables. The touch isn’t Hermes 3000 soft, I’d call it medium.

Have you ever (or do you know of anyone who has) tried using automotive sound deadener (such as Dynamat) on a typewriter? Also, I think that special screw you point out is a combination slotted/Robertson screw, the Robertson being the standard in Canada at the time.
@Joe_VanCleave2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tried Dynamat, but I suspect it would work well. Let us know if you have success.

This is something I always wanted to try myself. I was also always curious if other materials could work even better at sound-deadening. Such as DynaMat as is used in automotive applications. I'm pretty sure the original "tar paper" type materials used on typewriters as sound proofing are intended to dampen the resonance of the metal casing more than absorbing sound, so trying alternate materials could be worthwhile?

Hey I was wondering if you know how to work out what type of ribbon a marx light-touch would use

Its a really beautiful typewriter! Would you know if this typewriter was made in black?

I’ve never seen them in black, only in this light tan color.

I also have a Royal Mercury (was inspired by your favorite ultraportables video) - I'm not super handy, but do you have any recommendations for exact materials to use? Or if there are any kits out there like Ted Munk's? Thank you!
@Joe_VanCleave2 жыл бұрын
There are sheets of adhesive foam, about 2-3mm thick with a peel#off adhesive backing, available at craft stores like Hobby Lobby.

@@Joe_VanCleave Thank you so much for responding! Will try that.

Hey Joe! "...Where you goin' with that typewriter in your hand..." Save yourself some syliiabubs, try "Damping" instead of 'dampening'
