I heard Sir Alexander Gibson guest conducting the Houston Symphony many years ago. Dvorak 8th Symphony. A most memorable concert, and since, Dvorak 8th is my favorite of the cycle.

Karajan's VPO Decca of the 8th is one of the best things he ever did.

@@musiconrecord6724 I’ve always thought Karajan was better with the VPO and Philharmonia, than in Berlin.

I absolutely love the sound of the London Philharmonic....especially the brass, which have a much more dark and "burnished" sound than the brighter London Symphony. This is why I find the London Phil to be the PERFECT orchestra for Vaughan Williams symphonies....and also a huge reason I prefer Boult over Previn in that repertoire.

Couldn't agree more, though I still love the Previn. Recently acquired Slatkin's CD set of the VW cycle with the LPO, and so far it's fantastic! RCA really needs to do a Slatkin megabox!

@@musiconrecord6724 Oh, I thought Slatkin used the Philharmonia, rather than the LPO. But yes…Slatkin deserves a “Big-Box-O-Leonard”. The problem is that many of his best recordings are on Vox. That early Rachmaninoff cycle is among the absolute best, boasts excellent sound (though somewhat rough pressings), and one of the best principal trumpets ever who doesn’t get much credit. Her name is Susan Slaughter. Just listen to Slatkin’s old recording of Symphonic Dances. Wow. She was totally on point. Beautiful sound, powerful, and musical. She continued as principal well into the 1990s, so she is heard on all of the RCAs. To this day, I think she never got the same credit as other principal trumpets, perhaps maybe sort of because she is a she.

@@LyleFrancisDelp You are correct - Philharmonia it is. Mea culpa. Yes, those early Vox recordings are terrific. I have his Gershwin box, plus two records that were given an audiophile reissue. Fabulous stuff.

Are you familiar with the music of Boris Tchaikovsky? He was a true genius and I have tried to create some interest i his music with my writings, but they will rather play Richard Strauss. I first heard his "Sevastopol Symphony" some 15 years ago and I couldn't believe my ears. It felt like my heart stopped beating and my breathing stopped. His music is so beautiful, so passionate, dramatic and sorrowful. The solo for alto flute in the middle of the symphony breaks my heart every time. He studied with Shostakovich and the teacher loved his music. Please listen to the "Sevastopol Symphony" and discover what I wrote that he should be as often performed as his more famous namesake. The music speaks volumes about these times.

Once again, you are voicing my exact feelings....this time, not only about the monarchy, but also about the music, pomp, and circumstance. Like you, I love a good parade. Always look forward to your videos.

That Decca Tree, in combination with the amazing acoustics of Victoria Hall, Geneva, and the lean, clear textures and clear articulations in the winds and brass, cultivated by Ernest Ansermet, produced some of the most amazing audiophile records in recording history. Yes, the Suisse Romande could sound a bit unrefined at times, and I often grimace at the intonation in the WWs, but wow....those records are some of the finest ever produced. Natural sound, not artificially enhanced (as in Solti/Chicago).

I LOVE the Ansermet Deccas.... Have quite a few originals and various Speaker's Corner/King Super Analogue reissues. All marvelous, magical, and yes, with a touch of fairy dust. A big revelation was his set of the Haydn Paris symphonies which I feel is very underrated. Will eventually cover him here and in Tracking Angle.

@@musiconrecord6724 Oh my! Yes! Ansermet’s Haydn is wonderful. Lean textures, brisk (but not too fast) tempi. It has always struck me as being “period instruments” before period instruments were cool. I have a few conductors I truly love in Haydn symphonies. Ansermet. Bernstein. Jochum. Davis. Marriner. All very different, but all utterly musical.

Great video. Have you heard the Pomp and Circumstance marches with Menuhin and RPO? Please listen to no 2. It is so fast you can hardly believe it. It is very impressive with very disciplined playing. I think Menuhin's Elgar is very good overall but hey are never mentioned. The same with Jeffrey Tate.
