Royal Navy's HMS Queen Elizabeth visits New York - New York: The largest ship ever built for Great Britain's Royal Navy is visiting New York for a week.
The aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth sailed into New York Harbor on Friday carrying about 1500 sailors.
Commanding officer Captain Jerry Kyd called the visit "very symbolic of the intimate relationship the Royal Navy has with the US Navy and Marine Corps."
The ship is anchored in view of the Statue of Liberty and can be seen by Staten Island Ferry commuters.
The 284-metre warship carries up to 60 aircraft.
British Defence Minister Gavin Williamson welcomed the Queen Elizabeth to New York. He called the ship "a symbol of our commitment to our (hash)security and the security of our allies" on Twitter.

It is a shame that America doesn't truly consider itself part of the Commonwealth when it is technically a child nation of Great Britain, a child that obviously and spectacularly outgrew its parent nation. But it is still a updated product of Britain; its original colonists where British, it speaks the same language, its values and constitution are practically a modern/upgraded version of Magna Carta which solidifies into written law the classical British liberal ideals of freedom, justice and equality (something we never got round to doing despite having the ideals for a few centuries longer!). The Commonwealth and English speaking world should be more united with America playing the real leading role next to the British as the symbolic leading role, seeing as Britain originated the whole concept and America redefined and improved it

@@williamjordan5554 That's still just a technicality of the term, in spirit it is a group of nations who all share the same values born from the same culture to maintain close ties. The US is still a descended nation of Great Britain, most of its values and customs are borrowed from Britain just the same as many other commonwealth nations, there really isn't much difference between the US's relationship with Britain as with other commonwealth nations' relationship with Britain

We do things differently than the Americans, the Americans always maintain a big military force that's always ready for war, the British maintain a reasonably low military force to keep the economy high but if it comes to war we CAN build a big military thanks to the high economy, but only IF it's needed, meaning under normal circumstances we can focus on the people. America has such a strong economy they can do both, but we don't have that luxury, a big military means lowering living standards for the people, so the option's there if needed but while it isn't needed we maintain a basic minimum of just about being Europe's biggest military power and America's most powerful ally but we hold back to increase living standards for the people, but we CAN build bigger if we need to

The problem is that Mrs May is a remainer along with most of her conservative govt, Labour, Lib Dem are almost totally pro EU same as the SNP who also wanna break up the union. The only real pro UK party is UKIP which has little to no MPs in Westminster, theyre power lies in the eu parliament. The vote was a conservative move to stem UKIPs rise to power at home and put to bed the idea of independence forever. Worked in the former but backfired massively. Brexit, because its so massively complex with many groups wanting different things, needs politicians fully committed to breaking away and fighting our corner. Instead its been a big free for all, a complete shambles because they know they would be finished as a political party if they outright cancelled brexit and went against the vote

The needs of a Royal Navy carrier are a bit different from the US which has both super and light carriers that can preform different roles with our Elizabeth carriers need to act as a swiss army knife. Nuclear would be just for dick measuring and detrimental since not only cant they dock but have to spend years in port for refuelling throughout it's service life and we don't have enough carriers for that. I'm not even sure why India is going nuclear with their new carrier.

Conventional powered carriers over their lifetime, will spend more time at sea than a nuclear powered carrier. Nuclear carriers spend a lot longer in dock being serviced, because of the highly dangerous nature of it's power system. Also catapults put a tremendous amount of stress on a carrier, so the decks need a lot of maintenance

All fair points I hadn't considered actually, I guess my view was that nuclear future proofed the investment. It just had a tad too much of "we had to cut back costs" about it. But the more ive looked into it the more it seems there were actual strategic advantages.
