most people in colombia and brazil have no value for these fish, its just a means of a trade/survival, but for the small group of those who actually appreciate and care for aquatics in those areas are living a dream , you can essentially build your own aquarium by hand out there

I haven't seen one for sale in years and back in the 80's they were common and not very expensive. Last I saw- they were very expensive.

there is some indication it is the bacterial mass on the surface of the wood. There is a recebr paper on this: Nelson et al: "Wood-eating catfishes of the genus Panaque: Gut microflora and cellulolytic enzyme activities"
