Royal Tartan Patterns and What They Mean

With their ancient links to Scotland, it’s no surprise that the Royal Family have always loved tartan. King Charles can often be spotted in a tartan kilt, but what do the different patterns mean?
This is the ‘Duke of Rothesay’ pattern. The title is traditionally held by the heir apparent meaning Prince William inherited it from his father when Charles became king.
Here the King is wearing the ‘King Charles III’ pattern. Specially created to mark his coronation. It was created ‘in recognition of The King’s strong support in preserving the culture and traditions of Highland Dress and Scottish Tartans.’
Both the King and Queen are wearing tartan here. King Charles is wearing the ‘Stewart Hunting’ pattern, this is a subdued and green dominated variant of the Stewart Clan tartan sometimes used for hunting game.
Meanwhile Queen Camilla is wearing ‘Balmoral’ pattern tartan. This pattern was a favourite of Queen Victoria it should only be worn by the Royal Family, and the ‘Piper to the Sovereign’.
This appears to be the weathered variant of the ‘Royal Stewart’ pattern. The ‘Royal Stewart’ is one of the most widely used patterns, and can be seen on picnic blankets all over the world. But it has long been a Royal favourite, and has been worn since King George IV.
Said to be one of King Charles’ favourites, this is the ‘Prince Charles Edward Stewart’ pattern is another Stewart Clan variant. It’s the pattern the King chose to wear when he took part in the solemn ‘Vigil of the Princes’ where he stood by Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin in Edinburgh accompanied by the Royal Company of Archers.

Growing up (in Massachusetts) among Scottish and Irish tartans, I love that they not only have such variety but also specific meanings. Almost each workday for me is color coordinated around flannel shirts (usually flannels of different weights for different seasons). While neckties often make me dysphoric, I do have woolen neckties (for formal occasions) repping the counties that my ancestors came from. That also gives me some reason to seak out clothing with the Nova Scotian tartan.

I have always been fascinated by the tartans and their various meanings. My material grandmother was both a Campbell and a McDonald (yes, really!) and as a child, I often wore tartan skirts that were gifts from her.

I still love my Balmoral Tartan jacket which I had since before 1974. I traveled to Britain often all those years ago, but nobody ever said peep about it. I did not know it was special until a few years ago. Must ask Hilary Kay of the Antiques Roadshow one day.

They weren't always linked with tartan. They forbade Scots from wearing from the time of George II to George IV. The latter only wore it for his visit to Edinburgh. Tartan was associated with support for the Stuart claimnants. In fact Charles Edward or Bonnie Prince Charlie was hunted down by Charles's direct ancestors and driven out of Scotland. Only when Charles Edward's brother, Henry Cardinal York was in danger from Napoleon was there any rapprochement. Anyhow Charles Edward's most durect descendent is now Duke of Bavaria and his grandnephew Wenzel having been born in London and having served as an officer in the Irish Guards will eventually become a descendant of James VII ruling as Sovereign over a European monarchy albeit a very small one - Liechtenstein!
