People scoff at the price of a Brigg umbrella which is typically around $500-$1000, keep in mind these are highly crafted umbrellas made to last for decades and outlast the mass produced umbrellas. Consider how much is spent on repetitively buying the $20 import disposable umbrellas. It adds up. Not only that, they retain their value really well, try finding ones online or elsewhere they are quickly snatched up. These umbrellas look great decades after being made. Have several 20-50+ year old Brigg umbrellas, they look timeless, and only get better over time. Beautiful quality workmanship. Great video!

They are massively overpriced... They aren't the only ones making solid stick and you can get similar or better quality umbrellas from equally (or more) distinguished London umbrella makers for considerably less. You are better off going with any other traditional umbrella maker - be it Ince, James Smith or Fox that isn't over-marketed and overpriced...

@@JimIBobIJones Also own several wonderful Fox, James Smith, James Ince, really doesn't matter no concern on price. Brigg though is the the only company still offering silk it is a beautiful natural fabric and is one of the best materials for rain. Online and resale the Brigg hold their value exceptionally well and no problem selling and highly sought after due to supply/ demand. Fox produces 400 umbrellas per week where Brigg makes about 100 per month. Do you have any good Fox or James Smith/ Ince umbrellas? :) ☔

@@mattsloan3920 Have (or have had) umbrellas from all three, and solid sticks from JS and Ince. And price does matter. There isn't really a ceiling on price or material for these things, its pretty dumb to buy a terribly basic solid stick when there are better options at any given price. If money was no object Brigg are still terrible options compared to getting something in exotic wood or better quality (like a twin rib frame). The best Swaine/Brigg offers is chestnut wood (which is pretty damn basic) at £1k and with equally basic construction... Silk is also a retarded material for a rain canopy, it doesn't deal well with with moisture, moisture invariably warps it and weakens the fibres. It also isn't completely waterproof. It really should be reserved for sun umbrellas. But if you really want it, yes you can get it with JS and Fox both offer bespoke services and you can negotiate custom options in shop.

Here in Tennessee, we sometimes experience torrential rain, sleet, snow and icy wind. I purchased my Briggs Umbrella in 2003 and it is luxurious beyond description. I grew up in Dallas,, Texas and I was as frequent shopper at Neiman Marcus' downtown flagship store for many years. I can safely say that even Neiman Marcus has nothing that comes close to the quality and elegance of a Briggs. Yes, I DO use it. I did not buy it only to have it hang on a rack and not be used. This Christmas I am treating myself to a second Briggs, and I plan to purchase one with a silk canopy. I suspect any of the Briggs line can be passed down from one generation to another for years to come.

The term is applied to those who are independently wealthy and who do not work as a result. Of course, a gentleman is expected to be of good manners, chivalrous, etc., but an independently wealthy man who does not work might respond to the question : "What do you do?" with "I am a gentleman." The money comes from other sources, though, it isn't like you get paid to be a gentleman. On some older census records the term "gentleman" is used in lieu of a trade, in the column called "profession".

Well, he's only wearing an 8 rib model so what does he know? 16 or 24 ribs are the new standard for the modern gentleman. They're not just more robust but also look more aesthetically pleasing.

I never realized an umbrella could cost that much! I’ve always thought of them as a utilitarian necessity for some places, but I’m amazed at the materials and workmanship of these umbrellas!

"It''s the distinctive look that seperate a man from another"... "One shouldn't have a nylon umbrella" ... His father should be shameful for having such a well-dressed, but shallow and egocentric guy. And the channel calls him "gentleman".

In England "gentleman" is an aesthetic now. All it means is to dress well (suit and tie) and be insufferably South-english. Its understood to be a behavioral profile in America, and a douche in the UK.
