It is customary to use the title of the highest royal peerage or in their case the Wales title as that is unique to the male heir apparent. Regardless of any "continental custom", Marie Christine's title is a British title, and it is used, not because of any "continental custom", but because HRH Prince Michael of Kent DOES NOT HAVE a Royal Peerage. That is the only title he has and goes by unlike the other Princes. His elder brother is The Duke of Kent. Michael has no Dukedom or Earldom, or otherwise. That's why she is titled that way.

Well, as the wife of HRH Prince Michael of Kent, that is the title which she is entitled to. She IS a princess by marriage just as Catherine is, just a different ranking. Phillip's mother, I guess before her nun days, was titled Princess Andrew of Greece and Denmark because that is the title she was afforded as Prince Andrew's wife, even though she was born Princess Alice of Battenburg, of course changed after 1917. IT is the same with Princess Michael of Kent. I think she was an Austrian Baroness or something. Nobody talks about The Late Dowager Duchess of Gloucester, she was NOT ROYAL and went as far as to get permission form Elizabeth II to use a title she wasn't even entitled to use as the widow of a Prince, not a princess of the blood. The Dowager Duchess of Gloucester was given special permission to be called Princess Alice when her husband passed. Princess Michael is using the title that she is ENTITLED to use as the wife of Prince Michael of Kent. Gossip is not a reliable source of information.

Known in the RF as ‘ Princess Pushy’. Certainly beautiful & photogenic AND SHE KNEW IT ! I always found her overly conscious of the Cameras around and played to the gallery. A very, very vain woman and her speech affected - but she was educated and no doubt multilingual. She had flair and was not above using her fairly loose Royal connections for money & favours. Not really my cup of tea as a person. Compared to the Mountbatten-Windsors she was the poor relation and that must have irked her, being brighter and more savvy than the lot of them put together. Her requests to the Queen for money were quietly put in a drawer and forgotten. She’s still around though.

Battenberg was his mother's former maiden surname and part of her German title prior to 1917. His father's name was not Battenberg. The name of the House is Windsor, changed from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. They can use Mountbatten-Windsor as a surname, BUT that is particularly for those in the MALE line who don't carry Princely titles.
