Minor correction: The current title of former queen regnant is princess. The reason for this is that there can only be one living monarch. With a king succeeding a queen regnant, the chances of confusion are lessened, but it started with the abdication of queen Wilhelmina in favour of her daughter Juliana, when there could have been confusion. Upon her death (may she live long), the title of queen will be restored upon her.

Actually traditional monarchies still exist and scattered all over Indonesia only in title. But only the Sultan of Yogyakarta has legit power over his traditional territory, though limited by constitution. The rest of the monarchs aren't really a monarch, just a preserver of tradition and historical heritage. But they aren't mere citizen with royal lineage like anybody else, because they still hold and inherit their royal title, have historical royal palace, and officially recognized by the government as part of cultural preservation (but not given any real power). @Jacquetta Woodville. Catherine did too much fasting for her own good. Plus, Henry VIII supposedly wasn't supposed to marry Catherine anyway; Henry VII considered marrying his son off to Eleanor of Austria (Catherine's niece who was closer to Hal in age) after Arthur died. But when Henry VII himself died Catherine managed to 'convince' the 17-year-old Henry VIII to marry her instead. We all know how *that* went...

@Jacquetta Woodville. I don't think you can argue 17-year-old Henry was a tyrant. He was amenable to working with others & reconciling with those who disliked his father's regime, & was willing to grant nearly every request asked of him. He was not yet the man he would be. So far as I know, the dowry situation was complicated; Catherine's original dowry wasn't paid out in full by Ferdinand & Isabella (cheapskates), & Henry VII was thus in limbo regarding whether he had any obligation to maintain her as his daughter-in-law or not. Henry VII still favoured marrying Catherine to Henry (he only briefly considered marrying her himself), & thus a new dispensation was created to this effect, but Henry VII changed his mind after Isabella's death. After that, Catherine no longer had any use for his diplomatic ambitions, and thus Henry VII stopped the planned wedding between Catherine & Henry. Eleanor of Austria came with the same connections but was closer to his son's age, which made her slightly preferable. Catherine should have gone home to Spain at this point, but her father Ferdinand refused her passage (he's a dick), leaving her barefoot in England. Then Henry VII dies & Henry VIII *suddenly* decides he wants to marry Catherine. Question is why? You can't tell me Catherine did *nothing* in those years, & this turn of events was certainly in her favour (she goes from spurred fiancé to Queen overnight). I'm inclined to believe she made herself 'favourable' to the young king, given Catherine was several years older than him & certainly smart enough to serve her own interests.

Dutch monarchy dates back to 1815. The Orange-Nassau's held the title ''stadtholder'' (i.e. Magister Militum) in the Dutch states between the 16th century and 1795, and weren't monarchs, even though they played a comparable role. The title of stadtholder became inheritable in 1747.
@jeandehuit53853 жыл бұрын
IIRC this is more-or-less correct. But there were many Stadholderships; one for each Dutch province (Holland, Gelderland, Frisia, etc.). Many branches of the Nassau family (not just the Oranges) held Stadholderships (such as the Nassau-Dillenburgs); the Orange-Nassaus just happened to hold the highest number/most important Stadholderships at any time. And while not a monarchy, there *were* those in Dutch politics (the Orangists) who wished to make the republic more like a typically monarchy, with the Oranges ofc. being in-charge.

Hello! Dyah from Indonesia here, and currenty residing in Yogyakarta city! I hope in the future you'll make video of Subnational Monarchies in the world! From Indonesia, we have Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X from Sultanate of Yogyakarta, a Special Region of Indonesia. Yes, they still included in Indonesia's sovereignity, but because of Yogyakarta's rich history and culture, almost undefeatable from Portugese, British, VOC/Dutch and Japan colonizations, and once held as a brief capital city of Indonesia instead of Jakarta during the still-fresh freedom of colonization and still-full of revolution era at that time (pasca our Independence Day in August 17th 1945), they were granted their own special government where the Sultan is a Sultan as well as the Forever-Governor of the Special Region instead of 5-year elected governor in other regions and often as one of the Minister in our Democracy Nation's Cabinet.. The monarch was hereditary and a male heir as a heir presumptive, but now, our current Sultan only had 1 wife (instead of several like his predecessors) and only have daughters, so the issue of heirs is still a bit controversial here.. Franco became head of state in 1939 at the end of the civil war and the monarchy was reestablished upon his death in 1975 with Juan Carlos I, the grandson of Alfonso XIII, who did in fact have sons. Juan Carlos was named heir in 1969 by Franco who disliked Alfonso's heir,, Don Juan de Bourbon who was Juan Carlos's father.. Fun fact: Norodom Sihanouk once held every top positions in Cambodia. He was once a prince, then became king, then abdicated in favor of his father and became prime minister. Then he was removed from power and after 18 years of the American backed government, followed by the Khmer Rouge and followed by the Vietnamese occupation. He then became President of Cambodia for a short while before it transitioned back into a monarchy and he became king again.

WE NEED a series or documentary video of the most reigning monarch 72 years in total, Louis XIV of france! I'd love to know his childhood, history, and time being on the throne
@jeandehuit53853 жыл бұрын
There are quite a few in English et en Français (though I can't vouch for their veracity) From what I know, his early reign is considered far and away more successful than his later years (with some remarking that if he had died at some earlier date, he would have unquestionably gone down as France's most successful kings). Alas! His needless antagonism of his rivals (by going to war over the Spanish succession even when several powers such as Britain were willing to support Philip of Anjou's candidacy anyway; by revoking the Edict of Nantes and exile the Huguenots from France & throwing away his grandfather's hard-won gains in religious toleration) did a lot to undermine his reputation, from what I understand.

Fascinating that all the wives of kings and princes are presented with their titles, but Letizia the queen of Spain is only introduced as a journalist. Otherwise, a flawless video. However, I would be very interested to find out the sources for the list of "Traditional Monarchies", as I find it quite fascinating that the Republic of Panama qualifies as one.

Very informative video, Lindsay! Have you looked at the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)? Taking the time to learn it might help you with the different foreign names. For instance, English Wikipedia often has an IPA transcription of foreign names (or even unusual English ones).

This is good to know. The monarchy that is in the news most of the time is the British monarchy. I am aware there are other monarchies. I did not know there were this many of them. I did not know the pope was considered a monarch. It is good to get all the facts in order. Lindsay's videos are factual and fun to learn from.

Items to note: Sweden: the current Swedish Royal line descends from French Marshal Jean Bernadotte (Charles XIV John of Sweden, IIIrd of Norway) since 1818 UK: the crown of the combined three kingdoms dates from 1707, though an unbroken biological lineage does run directly from the original English monarchy.
