I always thought that it was INSANE that, in Versailles, it took 5ever for the Queen to get ready in the morning because there was like a pecking order for who handed what to whom when they were dressing the Queen. And when another lady in waiting showed up that was of a higher position than all the others… they all scattered and the process had to be redone to accomodate the woman that came in.
@Leno3232 жыл бұрын
I remember seeing that movie Marie Antoinette and even though they got stuff wrong, the dressing scene of Queen Marie was illustrated perfectly especially when a higher ranking lady came into the room and they had to start alllllll over. That must have been incredibly annoying.

Princess Diana's grandmother, Lady Fermoy, was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, the queen mother. Many assumed that the two women were the reason Diana and Charles got together, though Lady Fermoy her self denied this, and actully advised her grandaughter against it. Really interesting video! I always wondered what their purpose was!
@musanyathi22982 жыл бұрын
Real modern toff aristocrats don't want to marry into the RF. It's considered a civil servant job under intense public scrutiny. Charles, William and Harry had several proposal refusals. Diana was naive and did not understand what an arranged marriage entailed..
@l.n.33722 жыл бұрын
I've heard tho that Queen Elizabeth/Queen Mother did prefer the Spencer girls because of her familiarity with her lady in waiting. And that the Queen Mother was among those who did push for Charles to marry Diana instead of Camilla. So even if the lady in waiting didn't necessarily support it too, that's still a good reason why the Queen Mother preferred the Spencer girls.

Some royals forge strong relationships with their ladies-in-waiting. For example, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother count the likes of Ruth, Baroness Fermoy and Cynthia, Countess Spencer as her ladies-in-waiting. It was even said that The Queen Mother plotted with Lady Fermoy to marry her grandson Charles to her friend's granddaughter Diana. As for Diana, her ladies-in-waiting included her childhood friend Alexandra Loyd - the daughter of Sir Julian St. John Loyd and granddaughter of the Earl of Midleton and her own sister The Lady Sarah McCorquodale. It was said that Diana initially wanted her good friend and fourth cousin Sarah Ferguson as her Lady-in-Waiting but it was vetoed by the palace saying that Sarah though part of the gentry, was not "posh" enough.

There is a story (true) told by Jonathan Swift. It concerns a lady in waiting. The young woman had been sent by her parents to court in the hopes that she'd make an advantages marriage. While there she meet a young squire who fell in love with her and asked for her hand in marriage but she refused. She had bigger fish to fry. She had become involved with an Earl and it wasn't long before she became pregnant with his child. She tells him that she's pregnant, but he dumps her. He said, "Do not try to palm off to me that which could easily be someone elses." The poor silly girl is very unhappy because there she was pregnant and alone and wondering what she will tell her parents. Fortunately, the young squire that she had turned down (because he wasn't of a high enough rank for her) returned (he knew about her problem) and asked her to marry him. This time she didn't turn him down, they married and the squire took his bride and her unborn child to his home in the North of England and she was never heard from again. According to Swift that silly girl was simply one of many many girls who were used like that by men more experienced in the ways of the world; only few of them had happy endings like the girl in this story. 😐

I think it's interesting how the English term 'lady-in-waiting' is centred around their purpose (i.e. to wait on the queen) whereas the Dutch, Swedish and German term 'hofdame/hovdam/Hofdame' simply mean "court lady" without specific duties attached to the title. Side note: English isn't my native language and it took me forever to realise the name refers to 'waiting' as in 'waiter/waitress'. I kept wondering what these women were waiting for. xD

Excellent video on an oft-overlooked but influential position. FYI: Catherine Willoughby, the Duchess of Suffolk who Henry considered as a possible 7th wife if he got rid of Catherine Parr, was not only the widow of his best friend Charles Brandon, and the successor as Duchess of Suffolk to Henry's sister Mary Tudor who was Brandon's previous wife, but Willoughby was also the daughter of Catherine of Aragon's BFF Maria de Salinas. Talk about keeping it in the family! I had not known Susan Clarencieux had retired to the court of Philip II. Interesting! Lettice Knollys had a son Robert Devereaux, Earl of Essex, who also became a favorite of Elizabeth but rebelled against and was beheaded. Mary Sydney was also the sister of Robert Dudley. Mary & Robert's father was the Duke of Northumberland who had tried to place his daughter-in-law Jane Grey on the throne in 1553, thus making his son Guilford at least the Queen's consort but with an eye to making him King. A couple of errors: • Marie Antoinette's friend, the Princess de Lamballe was not guillotined. As Lindsay later details, she was given to the mob. After a hasty trial in which she would not swear hatred of the king and queen she was released, "Let Madame be set at Liberty," i.e., throw her to the mob. She was escorted to the street where the mob promptly killed her. While details of her treatment are confused, she was decapitated. Just not with a guillotine. She wasn't even granted that much mercy. • Elizabeth Woodville married Edward IV in 1464, not 1452. In 1452 Edward was 10 years old, Elizabeth was busy marrying her 1st husband Sir John Grey, and Henry VI was on the throne. The marriage was a private one, not announced even to Edward's family until more than a year later. While witnessed by her mother and a couple of her mother's ladies, I don't think they can be described as Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting. Elizabeth and her mother likely had a hand in the Burgundian influence on Edward's court, as the Duke of Burgundy was a family relation and Edward married his own sister Margaret to Charles the Bold in 1468. • Mary Boleyn was not married off when she became pregnant. She married William Carey in 1520. Her first child, Catherine was born in 1524; Henry may have been the father of both of Mary's children but if so he never acknowledged them as he did Henry Fitzroy (his son by Elizabeth Blount).

Catherine Howard wasn’t unfaithful, she had slept with someone before Henry. As far as we know, sue didn’t cheat on Henry.

Not when she was married to him, as far as we are aware.

Henry was a psychopath. What his wives did or didn't do. They didn't deserve such treatment.

She was groomed by her music teacher and slept with him, she also slept with Francis Dearham. As for Thomas Culpepper I don’t know if they slept together but they exchanged love letters. Thomas was Henry’s best friend and he was the one that took care of Henry

Catherine Carey is my 13th great grandmother, Mary Boleyn my 14th. It's weird to think that Henry was my 14th grandfather 😮

Catherine Carey was not Henry’s daughter, there’s zero evidence of that and he never claimed her, meaning he knew he wasn’t her father. Mary was a married woman when Catherine was born, meaning the affair was over

My first time here. I’ve asked Lady C several times to explain the different roles within the Royal households and I’ve been particularly interested in the Ladies in Waiting in the current day. I’ve got my cup of tea so here I go. Thank you in advance.

Lady C wouldn't have any clue as she is to busy writing gossip novels

Lady C is absolutely clueless, she makes up a majority of what she talks about and is not involved within the inner circle of the royals.

It was also a way to keep the nobility under surveillance and control. They had to dance attendance on royalty instead of possibly rebelling on their own estates.

i wonder what it was like to be a lady-in-waiting, were they always scared? Or were they chill
@jeffreycater54472 жыл бұрын
Think it really would depend on their personal relations with other people as well. A lady-in-waiting probably had not much to fear unless they were to outspoken or got themselves into trouble. But I’m sure there was always reasons to be nervous. What if The King wanted to seduce you? What if the Queen didn’t like you or was even abusive? Then there is the fear of losing your position and such your power with that position.

Hi lindsay, great video as usual! I know you made a video on pandemics already but if you haven’t done so, can you please do a video on illnesses that were prevalent in medieval Europe and ones that were especially common in royal families like haemophilia,porphyria, dysentery, etc. I often hear about these in your videos but considering I don’t really have any prior knowledge about medieval Europe/royalty until now, I often have to look them up. It would be nice to have them all compiled and explained in one video for reference. 😄

I imagine that the Queen in her advanced age might need a little help managing her day to day tasks like dressing and whatnot but I imagine she is a very proud and stubborn woman and insists on doing as much as she can on her own, true to British form. This is where I feel that her Ladies still come in, not to do it themselves, but to oversee the Royal healthcare team in charge of her health and well-being. I also imagine they do most of the medial tasks such as answering the Queen’s mail, organizing her schedule and overseeing the Palace staff to ensure that the Queen’s needs are being met properly.

If you were the daughter of a lesser noble like a Baron, your mother could’ve used her connections and sometimes sending gifts like a big ass bunch of quail eggs to get you into the Queen’s entourage. Lady Lisle was quite the haggler when it came to getting the Bassett sisters into the Tudor court, lol

I’ve been curious if Queen Elizabeth and the Duchess of Cambridge have ladies in waiting, I hope this video answers that! They sure don’t get any publicity (at least here in the US) if they do exist.
@catreinert8182 жыл бұрын
Queen Elizabeth has the same two ladies of the bedchamber since 1960 according to google. and Catherine just changed her lady in waiting in 2018. British papers do keep track of these ladies. I am also an american who is curious. especially since Diana's grandmother was the Queen mother's lady in waiting.

She has several, most notably Lady Susan Hussey is her prime one, then she has Susan Rhodes, Mary Morrison, Annabel Whitehead and her cousin, Lady Elizabeth Leeming. She recently lost two ladies in waiting, The Duchess of Grafton and Lady Farnham.
