I really like that bass sound. I find whenever I try to play bass instruments in ableton they often sound like they change tone between keys. This bass sounds way more balanced and even

Depends very much on what you're using for your bass sound (whether it's a single waveform, sample, waveshaper, FM, etc.) but there's a few things you can try to keep it consistent. Saturation will create harmonics that fill up the higher frequencies, this keeps the imaginary "loudness" feeling pretty uniform across all notes instead of just the higher ones. Try not overdo it (...unless you want to :). I tend to drive it up to the point that I hear the pleasant distortion I'm looking for, and then bring it back down to normalcy. Multiband compression (everyone loves OTT) can also help, and you can tune the defaults wayyyyy down to get something more subtle than the... OTT defaults. A simple (i.e. non-multiband) compressor can also work but you might run in to the same problem if the harmonic content is changing a lot. Using a separate sub-bass can also really help. Simple waveform like a sine or triangle. Keep it as clean as possible and absolutely DO NOT compress it. All your aggressive mixing should be on the mid-high end of the bass. You'll keep a consistent low-end that way and it leaves you much more free to shape the higher frequencies of the bass lead how you like. But then, some analogue synths are just magic and sound good already, as in the video 😄

@@mrdetonia Wow what an indepth reply! All of these things are somewhat new to me at this point in my journey but you've given me some really good ideas of what to look into next. From what I'm interpreting, it seems that its the unevenness of the harmonics. As I move up and down on the keys I'm getting strong resonance in different frequencies regions but if I have some fundamental consistency like a sub-bass or saturation at the high end then it would fix that inconsistency. You emphasize not compressing the low end bass, why is that? Thank you! :)

@user-rf2gt1vn1l No worries. On compressing the sub bass, it's more a preference thing, and you might find you like the sound in some cases. But generally, it's very easy to compress and crank it up and just end up blowing out the low end instead of accenting the main bass sound, which is what you (probably) want. That said, I'm a big proponent of just doing what you want as long as it sounds good. But rules of thumb are useful to avoid messy mixes, especially starting out or when experimenting with new stuff.

The default for some of the instruments in Ableton is for the filter cutoff key-tracking to be enabled, so what you're hearing probably is that. It's a stupid default.

Ever thought of trying to create your own sounds and write new music? It's quite a novel exercise these days, it seems. BOC has become the "No Stairway to Heaven!", for "musicians" who are actually just consumers with another hobby.

Recreating a recorded composition with any sound requires focused ears and passion. And such activity is an act of art too, which brings me a joy. Being a resented cunt in a comment section doesn’t require any effort nor talent.

making a sound identical to a synth artists' unique style is a fun practice, more complex in its layers than learning a song on guitar. plus sometimes I just wanna listen to this song man, it's a good song.
