I had the Don Miguel Translation of RPG Maker 2000 back in the day. It opened my mind to game making more than anything else. Don Miguel deserves a statue for his amazing deed of bringing this masterful engine to us in the western world, my english, at that point in time, was still in its infancy ( _we started learning english in 8th grade (one hour a week) and the teachers were bad, I learned more english from the South Park Movie then from my teachers_ ) and therefore I neither noticed nor cared about the shoddy translation. It worked, it was fun, I could make RPGs with very questionable, raunchy dialogues.

I grew up in rural Germany and got to know RPG Maker because of a big special report in Bravo Screenfun, a spin-off magazine from a big teen magazine called Bravo. It had a game made in RPG Maker on its disc (Vampire's Dawn, anyone?) and a huge article about how easy it is to make games with it. Soon, I asked a class mate to pirate the Don Miguel translation for me, and I dove right into game making, downloading assets onto a 128MB USB drive on the family computer to work with it on my own computer which wasn't connected to the internet... I would make screenshots in Warcraft III and later Spore of all things and use them as graphics for game ideas. It was all garbage, of course, but it was a way for me to learn software, production, and asset management, all of which is still helping me today in making music and doing the occasional Blender work. Thanks for spreading some love for the series, it's really been a fun and nostalgic watch!

Man, I was introduced to game dev in 2008 through rpgmaker when I was a freshman in highschool Hard pivoted to Gamemaker a little after, even when I was super confused by Gamemaker 7's interface But the moment my public American highschool's game club started holding classes for learning game dev through gamemaker's introductory how-to-make-games textbook... Man, like, I "have" games made (all prototypes, sure) but the journey that engine has put me on, even when I dabbled in other engines afterwards, lol But man, rpg maker xp and 2003, man, like, I was trying to use the engine at a time I didn't really "get" programming to find out where it's script writing was supposed to be in. As much as I found myself as a writer, I guess what I really wanted to do was make more action-oriented games with funny lil gimmicks (or games where the "story" wasn't textual, but through actions and stuff, or with mechanics meant to annoy players in fun ways), and that's where Gamemaker became that engine for me where RPGmaker was just something I used in the past The blank canvas-ness and planning required for an empty gamemaker or even an empty unity/godot file, maybe a love2d lua file or the random homemade game engine using cocos2d or threeJS, there was something, just, rewarding, taking what seems like nothing, into something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wanted so many things out of rpg maker. With XP I was really close, but... Yeah, twenty years later, I figured out why I lacked consistency. ADD (no h). That said, way back in XP, it had everything. Gridless movement, swf player to have proper animated cutscenes (playing videos was always a headache) and it also had a Linear Battle System plugin. Not the best, but still one. You know, the kind of battle system from the Tales of game series. This never happened, not only because of my ADD, but also because the battle system I wanted was usually either really bad or hard to work with. After that, I convinced myself that if I want to make a game, I need to learn to code and do what I want. Thus, I'm going to mess, in order, with pico-8, then dragonruby, and finally... Well, something with 3D. Anyway, that's a lot of cool rpgmaker stuff, good memories, lemme tell ya. I still have a copy or two of some reeeeally old sprite making tools from back then, which in a way are still very good. Aseprite ended up being the definitive kind of sprite and palette editor tho.

I'll probably have some Panda Express Orange Chicken for dinner today. I feel like the more recent RPG Makers have gotten away from what makes RPG Maker so great. The graphics are higher resolution with more colors. Back with RPG Maker 2000/2003, we had a resolution of 320x240 and that was plenty. It called back to a time with classic SNES RPGs, and for the solo creator it was much easier and faster to create tiles and characters at that resolution. Also with support for Javascript, it's strayed even further. Scripting with events was limited in RPG Maker 2000, but also incredibly powerful and some people did some amazing things with it. It was still easy enough for anyone to wrap their minds around. Now you're either desperately looking for a pre-made script that does what you want, or you're already a programmer who can do it yourself. If it's the latter, why are you using RPG Maker? I would like to see a new RPG Maker get back to the big chunky pixels, a focus on event scripting, and as a bonus add a first person grid-based dungeon mode like Eye of the Beholder or Etrian Odyssey.

Thank you for making this video. I'm an "old hand" who started with RPG Maker 2003 way back in, well, 2003 with a fan translation that made its way around the nerdy kids at my school. It's a big part of the reason I went on to do a Games Art degree, how I first learned about variables and if statements, and it helped me in my current career of creating eLearning as the first authoring tool I used in my job, Lectora, looked and felt a lot like RPG Maker. The only advice I would add to this video is related to the end segment, about actually finishing a project. I fell into that trap of new project, new project, new project until I joined game jams where there were smaller, more defined, scopes and a set deadline. That's when I started actually finishing things, because I had to.

I did complete one game with it, or it could have been a legit version I bought later, I think XP. There was a game-breaking bug that I found after I made a few copies to friends. Thankfully, they didn't find the bug. It was based heavily on the first RPG, Atari's Adventure. My favorite engine is still RPG Maker XP. More recently, I started working on another game in the MV engine. I didn't complete it; I ran into a plot issue and put it on hold. It's great to make a game and release it.

I appreciate the video. I've played a ton of RPG maker free games starting with Embric of Wulfhammer which I hope you've heard of, then a bunch of weird ones I wouldn't recommend but did enjoy. I've recently been thinking about making games but probably not in this format. I'm not much of a story teller and will probably make simple puzzles. But it was interesting to see a little of how this tool works and how it's changed. There was some mention of Undertale in the citations at the end, but if you thought it was RPG maker, it seems it was made in "game maker" actually. I actually used Game maker and it's probably a less JRPG version of RPG maker. Basically it's nothing special so it's interesting that Undertale was made with it.

Solid video. I've been goofing around with RPG maker for a few years now. I started to put some effort into it when I bought MZ. Then I decided to get 2003, and that was too simple. So I got XP and really liked that one. Then I went back to MZ and finally made a small game that people could play from start to finish, and it was base on a particular community and I think I had just as fun playing it as I did making it. I recently got RPG maker VX Ace, and I have to say I'm having a blast working with it. For some reason, I actually like that they did away with the layer system because for me it actually makes working with it faster. All the RPG makers seem to have some type of learning curve but I've figured out once you've worked with one for long enough , a lot of what we learn translates to other ones. Its great how they all present different challenges. I really love the default sprites of VX Ace, and XP as well. I'm really glad I started working with it on PC, because I can see why people would have a negative opinion of the console versions because of the lack of additional options that go beyond the basic versions. You're absolutely right, it's all what you do with this game engine that matters, and the work you put into it. This was an engaging video that really flew by quickly, I usually struggle to watch a 30 min video and I also have ADHD.

One thing to add to the timeline, though it sounds like you might be too young to remember or even experience. Back in the early 2000s, before the PC version of RPG Maker 2000 was officially localized, there was an unofficial localization by a Brazilian programmer named Don Miguel. I remember specifically grabbing that PS1 one and just spending hours on it twiddling away in my bedroom on an epic quest no one would ever play but me, and that was okay! (also: panda express orange chicken) Gotta nitpick a little, though: MV and MZ run on JavaScript, not Java. They're not the same language at all - it's just a dumb naming thing due to the origins of it back at NetScape in the 90s (they originally planned to port Java to make it a language for scripting the web, but eventually decided they'd be better off making an entirely new programming language with Java-like syntax).

Got started with MV Trinity for PS4, and once I realized how easy it is to work with -- and how limited it is compared to the PC and Mac versions -- I ditched it and got MV (and the later MZ). With all the high-end options available now, even the newest RPG Makers can seem a bit underpowered and over-complicated... At first. But once you learn the basics and discover that there are hundreds of plugins out that that will let you do damn near anything, creative possibilities will explode in your noggin like a tech-nerd supernova. It seriously is one of the best ways to get into game making... Even if that path leads you to realize that game making isn't for you. But I'm about dat MZ lyfe -- in fact, it's literally overtaken my whole life: Steam says 6,000+ hours so far, tho 80% of that is probably the game just sitting idle while I'm doing other things. VX ACE is the shit man, I really had so many memories with it, I also like the sprite style even though people who used MV finds me weird for liking it over MV haha. MV is the better engine though, it's easier to get sideview battle in it.

What's with the prelude text? It reads like weird... leaflet about a cooperative or ashram ? 🤔 Decent video, I suppose. I've never had the pleasure of using RPG Maker. Although I've played a bunch of RPG Maker games. The problems are limitations that are technical in nature but usually has good concepts behind it. I'm sure the people who create modules for RPG-M is interesting rabbit hole. The core of RPG-M is another "scripting language" with all the clicking & menus. It is a decent introduction to software for beginner but I must generally disprove of 'visual' programming languages & such. Writing software isn't so difficult... it's like mathematics, people hype it up in their mind & then psychologically trick themselves... but the idea of writing modular software or tools is interesting to me personally. Games previously used to be fairly easy to mod (Quake 2 comes to mind personally), now many companies seem to discourage the practice on a tech level much of the time... I wonder if there are similar tools to RPG-M that are more modular. Ruby / Javascript are good starts... Something that is on the cusp of an API or library? Like a modular SFML or SDL module for rendering sprites, movement; a combat module that is configurable & modular as well as extensible. Like how the Final Fantasy games are - Overworld, Battle, Scene etc -- they are/were distinctly written in modular parts. I am thinking about a modular engine for TTRPGs like D&D, GURPs with adjustable rulesets and such in perhaps JSON or YAML - engine strictly for combat rules. Or a modular card game? There are a finite amount of ways to manipulate cards to where you can play variations of poker, Triple Triad, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, M:TG, et cetera... *I appreciate the fact that you source your footage and much of your information.* I wish the practice was more widespread. Sorry for any errors. I am not super familiar with English. 👍

I just hate that making Black characters are blatantly non-existent. Gotta scrub the internet for the few out there (I think there's only 1 resource).

Hah...just checked and yeah still got my ps1 copy of the og RPG Maker. The owner of my local Game Crazy kept it for me after finding out I really wanted to give it a spin. Lemme tell you making dialog on a ps1 controller was laborious but if you could get past that then all your edgy-teenage stories about weed and shitty pixel nudity would come to life 😂
