27:40: There is! Yuffie takes her own equipped Materia and then up to 48 more, taking them in a priority order based on how rare and/or powerful each Materia is. As it happens, Ice is extremely low on the priority list: only Fire and Underwater are lower.

And if you wanna circumvent that, "all" materia is pretty high on the list and you can buy limitless in fort condor after a certain point. So you can just buy 48 all materia and let her steal those

Little known tip for Wutai. Yuffie can only steal so much materia in total so if you stuff your materia bag with more than she can carry, you can save your ice materia by hiding them at the bottom of the materia list. Most only see this occurence if they choose to save wutai for much later in the game

Was going to say that. Yuffie steals maximum of 48 materia and she doesn't just pick the top 48, she picks what she considers the best 48. So she will snatch all your summons and high level magic, but she would probably leave your Ice materia alone.

I was surprised that you didn't use some of the crazy support materia combos with ice during late game. E.g. You can have one ice/contain linked to mp absorb, another to mp turbo, another to hp absorb and yet another to all. When you cast the spell all the support effects stack. Also you didn't use elemental materia in your armour slots as much, which could have made some fights a bit easier.

If you ever do another challenge on FF7, once you have access to Junon, you can actually trigger the disc 2 encounters on the hallway with the soldiers training. Hit a red button, get a very annoying alarm to trigger and (if you have Ice 3, in this case) make the grind to level 50 to 60 pretty fast. Good AP too

@@homer23422000 yep, you might need to nab Beta from the Midgar Zolom, but the enemies give thousands of exp and hundreds of ap. Once you grind here, you are set until half of Disc 2

For Bizarro Sephiroth, I saw another comment mention the reflect Strat and it’s good. However if you were aiming to keep the fight as unaltered as possible, W-magic to double cast might’ve been preferable to additional grinding. Haste + big guard turn one, regen + Freeze turn two, spam double freeze until time to re-buff. This would’ve doubled the damage output and removed any need for healing. All in all, great video and I subbed. I’ll be watching more of your previous videos.

When Heligunner's HP is reduced to 250, it changes into it's second form (spinning heligunner, I guess) , where it has 90 Defense and 270 Magic Defense. In this form, it only uses Spinning Bodyblow and Flying Drill, inflicting more damage than his previous attacks, but without inflicting status ailments.

That's very kind of you to say! I've considered it, yeah. I'm just worried that KZbin is already over-saturated with reviews etc so there may not be enough of an audience for it. I'm currently loving Rise Of The Third Power - I think you'd like its convenience features, like automatically warning you before every irreversible story development, or allowing you to choose to re-spawn the enemies in an area at an in-dungeon shop if you want to grind (the game uses Chrono Trigger style on-map encounters, fyi).

One thing you could have done with Bizzarro Sephiroth is cast reflect on both you and him then only target yourself with your ice spells to cause damage. His healing heals you while his attack spells hit himself. TBH I kinda thought that's were you were going with the "they are allowed to hit themselves" clause. Great content though. +1 sub

If you plan to do such runs in the future, I'd advice to take multiple Ice materia and combine each with different support materia - MP absorb, quadra magic, MP turbo, magic counter, steal as well, etc. Works best with Comet, but any magic works fine with such combo :) And I envy you the patience, I'm not into challenge runs myself, so thank you for doing them, so I don't have to :D

If you’re looking for more RPG challenge ideas, might I suggest Tales of the Abyss but anime-style (that is to say, you copy the party that fights a given boss in the anime adaptation of this game) and no grinding? Mayhaps up the masochism by playing the 3DS port to deprive yourself of two-player cheese and locking yourself out of losing against bosses you’re allowed to lose like Asch. For added stipulations, you leave excess party members for dead if the anime had less than four characters partake in a boss (examples: Mohs, Kaiser Dist XX, and I guess final Arietta depending on interpretation), or pick out your four lowest-leveled characters if the whole player roster partook in a boss (example: Sync 1 and Van 1) or the anime skipped that battle (example: Behemoth). As for the grey area that is Lorelei-Van at the very end, the anime did the Luke & Tear version of the final battle while Guy and especially Jade contributed more to the fight than Anise or Natalia did, so that’s a special exception to the full party rule. … seemed worth suggesting

i did the opposite of a challenge for the last fight when I was young. Made Cloud unkillable. I don't remember the specifics but he'd cast phoenix on death reviving himself and everyone else and with a ribbon on there was nothing stopping him casting it. Then with W-summon and something was able to triple cast knights of the round and have the rest of the party mimic him so they'd cast it too. Set that up and walk away until that long ass animation was done playing multiple times then repeat. I can't remember if they'd cast it multiple times too though. It's also possible to miss the final limit break from cloud. Spent the entire fight just to show my friends and cloud just hit with a normal attack. I looked like a right fool.

First priority is party member KOs. Defend may keep them alive longer, making them able to absorb more damage from enemies, taking more damage away from Cloud. With the stipulation of Ice-only, I would recommend them attacking themselves to KO them. This is going to be an awesome video. It may even have me feeling like doing another solo with some rules. I have another short-ish game for you to try. A trilogy even. Can you beat the three Mega Man: Star Force games with your default Buster and Folder. Which also entails no Brother Band shenanigans (aka, plot-mandated power of friendship). Whether you wanna mess with each game’s specific transformation gimmick, since the first use is always forced, is up to you. It shouldn’t be too rough, since the game is balanced around that fact that your mobility is extremely limited and you’re given a shield that blocks most things you’ll be struggling to dodge. I would’ve suggested Buster only but the sheer tedium would’ve passed one month on its own.

@@RPGchallengeruns I’m skimming some speedruns, and it looks like base form Buster-only is much easier than in its older sister series, Battle Network. Creation Corporation has been doing Buster only and it is much more of a slog in those games thanks to diverse enemy lineups in mandatory encounters, a worse Buster overall, and greater emphasis on personal mobility.

I wonder if it would be possible to abuse Shizo's Quake Counter + Reflect to cause the ice head to attack itself. It'd require testing what counts as a "hit" - ideally we would trigger quake counters from both heads (while the fire head is still alive) wihile healing the ice head as little as possible in the process. I think part of the reason why minigames have slowly fizzled away from modern RPGs has to do with the same reason they were introduced in the first place: they're a change of pace. That also means that the style can be too different from what the players find enjoyable about the main game. Even worse if the minigames offer rewards that are useful for the main game, as it could result in people only playing this minigame for the destination and not the journey. Exhibit A: SMT Nocturne. If you want to gather every single magatama (and considering you need all of them to unlock the best one, you probably do), you need to beat every single stage in a puzzle minigame back to back. This is so despised (not helped by new game + re-locking magatamas) that the hardtype mod changed the requirements to be easier in what is otherwise meant to be the hardest way to play. Exhibit B: Battle Network 6. The virus battler minigame relies on luck of you don't have perfect positioning. Also, thanks to an oversight you currently have to beat it in any language other than English to avoid a postgame softlock, as you do.

That's a great point, yeah. Maybe devs need to include entirely optional mini games that don't offer "essential" endgame items. FF7 does this (mostly) very well with the Gold Saucer.

Supernova "only" does 99% of your max HP, so it can never kill you. I wonder if Bizarro Ene(r)gy counts as a Cure spell and can be reflected or as a magic that could be mitigated with Wall. Probably not though.

According to the game's files, 93.75% actually. (15/16) But the original japanese version did regular damage rather than a fraction of the party's health; I'm afraid I don't have a copy of that one handy so I don't know the actual numbers. (FWIW, it can cause Confuse, Silence, and/or slow at a base chance of 32%.) Similarly, Sephiroth's melee attack during the "last" phase of the fight will only cause 96.88% (31/32) of Cloud's HP. :P
