You are totally correct about the one piece not sounding like a loop and like it was setting a scene. It was setting a scene, we call them "Cinematics" or "Cut-Scenes" a lot of the time in video games where there is a break from the gameplay and instead you simply watch a story and some dialogue unfold to further the story without your input. So yes, it was a scene setting piece and was not meant to loop! Good catch!

I believe the track I am thinking of is called "The Light of Nibel". It is the end sequence song for the game, and, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever found in a game. It is sad, scary, and hopeful all at once, and I know this video was made a year ago, but if you ever get back to this game I really hope you listen to that track!

"Restoring the light, facing the dark" is definitely one of this ost's tracks that stays within the player through the game. It represents the composer's take on the feelings of danger and urgency (to be short, you have to escape drowning on this part of gameplay). So it would be nice to hear your analysis on this track, as it's pretty different from those you reacted to today, and known to be one of the most beloved parts of the ost. There's also the "Light of Nibel" track that is the climax of "restoring the light, facing the dark".

This game might just be the greatest piece of art I've ever come across. It's 10/10 stuff in every department. It looks beautiful most of the time and stunning in some places. The soundtrack is one of the best ever, anywhere. Just absolutely phenomenal stuff. And it tells this wonderful, beautiful, bittersweet, emotional story with very limited text or speech, mostly using visuals and music. You should absolutely check out the entire soundtrack and how the game itself looks and feels. I'm sure there are videos on YT and stuff that have the cutscenes back to back, not to mention tons of videos showing the gameplay as well. Also, about that... These four tracks are all from early cutscenes (like short cinematics, outside gameplay that move the story along), and that is typical of game soundtracks... Usually the first handful of songs are from opening movies, cutscenes, title screens, menus and the like and the background musics of the game are often in the middle. It's truly an outstanding creation. Absolutely everyone should check it out properly.

I love how your interpretation matched the ending theme too. It's easy to surmise theres a light vs. dark going on with any game but the dancing in and out of it and how you nailed the overall vibe. The Second installment of the game has some really great soundtracks including 'Resolution in Paradise' and 'The Spirit Willow' being some of my favourites. The boss soundtracks aswell 'Shriek and Ori' is probably one the best boss soundtracks ive heard, it fits the style and events of the final battle so perfectly.

So glad you are checking out Ori and the Blind Forest. The soundtrack was indeed recorded in studio with an orchestra. You nailed the references! You also are right that none of these tracks you listened to here were designed for looping. All the music here in this video was from the cinematic intro of the game. The real gameplay doesn't start until after the last song you listened to. There are lots of songs for when you are in the gameplay itself for the many different areas in the game. Hope you continue to explore the music of the Ori games!

I know it's skipping ahead to the next game but you mentioned about wanting something more aggressive; "Shriek and Ori", the final battle from the second game, is an amazingly powerful piece - immediately fills you with such dread but also the desperation to find the hope to succeed. Of course context means everything so maybe it hits harder for a first-hand player rather than a passive listener, but I'm sure you'll still feel the emotions I did. Thanks, Geebz - all the best!

Since you're asking for recommendations: I'd love to hear your take on two tracks from "Ori and the Will of the Whisps" (the sequel, also composed by Gareth Coker): 1. Kwolok's Hollow 2. Kwolok's Malaise …in that order, back to back. Kwolok is this wise, old, giant toad that sends Ori on a quest. And when you finally return to him, something rather drastic happens and he turns into a boss. The melodyies themselver are already masterful, but the musical transition between the two is just… **chef's kiss**

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but typically, the term(s) used for the parts of games that the pieces you listened to in this video come from is "cut-scene" or "cinematic", basically a little segment of the game that isn't something you can come back to that's played to showcase a scene or moment, or push the plot forward, removing player agency (usually) to allow the story to be told before returning control the player. In this instance, during the part where 'Embracing The Light', you do get to control Ori (the playable character) for a little bit in a small area to learn the controls a little, and experience the lighthearted beginning of the game, before control is taken away for a time. It's sort of an interactive cut-scene. There's a little part that loops before it fades into the next track (signaled by that heavy bass drum hit at the end), which is where The Calling Out starts, and the game plays itself for a bit (no context, but tissues are a must). Then 'The Blind Forest' is another semi-interactive cut-scene segment where you move Ori through a short path before the game takes over again for the big establishing moment. Comparing it to an establishing shot in terms of film language isn't too far off the mark, though I would lump in the big featured setpieces like fancy action sequences or a dance/musical number alongside to get the comparison a little closer. Journey didn't really have many cutscene moments, and Hollow Knight, while it does have a couple, is mostly gameplay too (the third section of Sealed Vessel, after the 'funeral march' part with the ostinato drops out, plays to an animated cutscene that is the last thing before the credits roll. it actually has three distinct ending musical pieces, and the OST (official soundtrack) version includes all three in sequence). Ori and the Blind Forest, on the other hand, has a lot more of these cutscene moments, especially at the beginning, often scored with their own unique pieces that don't play anywhere else in the game. There's also a few very cinematic sequences that are fully controlled, and some other commenters have mentioned "Climbing the Ginso Tree" or "Restoring the Light, Facing the Darkness", which would be fantastic other pieces to hear from the game. If you fancy trying your hand at an interesting platforming-based game, I would wholeheartedly recommend Ori!

I'm sure someone else has pointed this out by now, but all the pieces in this video were from cutscenes (or at least sections that aren't free roam), so you thinking that it was like they were from a movie was very on point! It's a very story-driven section, and the musical hits are timed perfectly with the visuals!

You should do a part 2 on this, there quite a few good tracks you should listen to. What you listened to are some starting soundtracks used in the beginning of the game which are meant to be listened to in sequence as one piece leads right into the next, some of the songs which have a middle segment that is looped through to blend in seamlessly with ending segments

What you referred to as an "establishing shot" in a game might be referred to as a cutscene or cinematic (cinematic usually refers to a high-fidelity computer-generated shortform video, while a cutscene could also be live action).
@Xeromm Жыл бұрын
To answer your questions about how these tracks fit in the game: they're from the opening cutscenes. (Cutscenes being bits of the game where you just watch the story unfold. Music here doesn't loop.) You're on the mark in saying that they sound like establishing shots, for the story is being established here. There also isn't a lot of dialogue in this game, so the music does most of the speaking.

If you want more Gareth Coker, check out Ark's soundtrack, its phenomenal, everyone who plays the game agrees the music is one of the most consistently amazing parts of the game. the base theme is amazing, but what is great is the theme is adapted for every dlc map, and so the theme evolves over the course of the dlcs, my favourite being Extinction theme, but Aberration is also a fan favourite, but if you want 1 piece that is truly unique, Overseer is where its at, its the final boss of the base game and has all the big themes throughout it but its a long pieces, so Credit theme is also another option, and if you're able check out the Ark 2 trailer music, it was composed by Gareth and is a great evolution of the Ark theme for a new game so to summarize for ease of reading Ark Theme - 6min *Extinction theme - 9min Aberration theme - 6min *Overseer theme - 12min (dont have to listen to the whole thing) *Credits theme - 4min (and exact title for this one as its posted by Gareth himself) **ARK II soundtrack - ARK II Main Theme & Past Lives - 7min * are for my favourite choices anyway thanks if you made it this far, love the videos, keep up the awesome work :)
