Accessory Belt System: Most internal combustion engines have an accessory belt system that drives various components such as the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, and water pump. These components rely on the engine's rotation to operate effectively.
Pulley Bearings: Each of these components has a pulley with a bearing that allows it to spin freely when the engine is running. If one of these pulley bearings becomes jammed or starts to fail, it can create resistance to the rotation of the pulley.
Increased Load: When a pulley bearing jams or becomes stiff, it forces the engine to work harder to overcome the resistance caused by the malfunctioning bearing. This increased load on the engine can lead to fluctuations in RPM as the engine tries to compensate for the reduced efficiency of the accessory belt system.
