Professor Alison Pilnick, from the Manchester Metropolitan University, joined me to discuss her award-winning book, “Reconsidering Patient Centred Care: Between Autonomy and abandonment.” She also shares her journey into research and gives a Masterclass on Conversation Analysis.

Bio:
Alison Pilnick is Professor of Language, Medicine and Society in the Faculty of Health and Education at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is a sociologist of health and illness with a specific interest in communication between professionals and their patients and clients in health and social care. She has worked with a wide range of professionals across a diverse range of care settings both in the UK and overseas, using audio and video recordings to examine interactions and to inform and develop communication skills training. This work has been funded by bodies including the British Academy, ESRC and NIHR. She has published 4 books and over 60 journal articles spanning the fields of sociology, health and medicine, communication studies and medical education. Her most recent book, ‘Reconsidering patient centred care: between autonomy and abandonment’ was published in 2022 and draws on the work she carried out during a British Academy Senior Research Fellowship; the book was awarded the 2023 Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness prize for the book making the most significant contribution to medical sociology. Alison was selected as an Academy of Medical Sciences FLIER (Future Leader in Innovation, Enterprise and Research) in 2020-21, and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2015 in recognition of her work in healthcare.
