STORYLINE
British military traditions go back a long way and although some have been adapted, the Chelsea Pensioners are a vivid reminder of the country's heritage. The Pensioners are veterans who live in the splendid Royal Hospital, right in the heart of London. Old comrades share memories of long-forgotten battles, a rough sense of humour - and they live 10 years longer than the average Briton. With the Chelsea Flower Show on this week and many celebrations of tradition and heritage planned for Queen Elizabeth's golden jubilee year, the Chelsea Pensioners are again a focus of attention.

My aunt was matron of this hospital,then when retired Matron of Blind Hospital in Scotland. She was given a Red Cross medal by the late Queen. Wished younger ex military got this kind of help. Not homeless on the streets.
