@@hossydarams9726 thank you for your patience. Dr Akingbade has taken the time to give a detailed response to your questions: 1) What are the basic tips or steps to becoming a nurse researcher as a graduate nurse in Nigeria? The role of a 'Nurse Researcher' is not well-defined in Nigeria's healthcare system. Although some nurses work as 'Research Nurses' on funded studies or with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research as a Clinical Research Nurse, there is no specific role for research nurses in hospital settings as seen in countries like the United Kingdom. Nurses in Nigeria, whether working as administrators, clinical instructors, or nursing officers in hospitals, can also take on roles as Nurse Researchers. However, this research work is often driven by personal interest and does not typically influence their career advancement, unlike lecturers in Nigerian universities, for whom research is a key factor in promotion. This distinction explains why university lecturers in Nigeria are more commonly engaged in research activities. To become a Nurse Researcher in Nigeria, follow these steps: a. Build Your Research Competence: Enroll in research courses offered by organizations like the Institute of Nursing Research Nigeria, which has a journal club that systematically builds research competencies for nurses. Keep an eye on their social media platforms for application details (x.com/inrnigeria). Since 2016, this NGO has grown into a global network of researchers, providing you with the opportunity to connect with nurse researchers worldwide through this platform. AuthorAid is another global platform with courses for Nurse Researchers. b. Pursue Further Education: Consider enrolling in a master’s program in nursing or a related field, which will expose you to advanced courses in research methods and statistics. You can also pursue a PhD to further enhance your skills. c. Collaborate with Experienced Researchers: Get involved in research projects. Assist with data collection and literature reviews and participate in research seminars and workshops. Also, connect with experienced nurse researchers, join professional organizations, and attend nursing conferences to gain mentorship and insights into the field. d. Build a Strong Foundation in Evidence-Based Practice: Stay current with the latest research in your area of interest and learn to apply evidence-based practice in clinical settings. e. Develop Analytical Skills: Enhance your skills in data analysis using tools like SPSS and NVivo. f. Seek Research Opportunities: Look for research positions or internships that provide hands-on experience. Some individuals or organizations may have opportunities for budding researchers. 2) Can a nurse specialize in research at a postgraduate level? Yes, a nurse can specialize in research at a postgraduate level in Nigeria. All MSc and PhD programs in Nursing in Nigeria are research-focused. Unlike some master's programs abroad that are 'taught' and do not include a research project (and the students do not take research methodology as a course in some of these programs), MSc and PhD nursing programs in Nigeria are research-based. Therefore, any nurse aiming to build advanced research skills in Nigeria should pursue postgraduate studies in Nursing, where they will be exposed to advanced research courses. I hope this helps!
