One doesn't have to go far these days to find
examples of the human cost of progress. A hundred
or so families in West London found they had to go no
further than their back gardens to find one in the
shape of Westway, London's new 33 million elevated
motorway. Some of the families were within 50 feet of
the road, and all of them complained that the noise
and vibration had made their lives impossible.
They've now been promised almost immediate re-
housing by the authorities, but it took some pretty
determined demonstrations to achieve this.

It feels strange that these contoversial constructions were so strongly opposed when being planned and built (and rightly so) but 50 years later the majority of people use them with no idea of opposition and disruption that it caused to people's lives. We just accept it as if it had always been there. Near me there are houses going up on lovely fields and woods, but the people moving in will have no idea what was there before and what got lost. If they weren't local before they'll likely not even care. And in 50 years' time few will even remember what was there before the houses got built.

They were all rehoused in the Lancaster Estate / Nottingdale = Grenfell and the other High rises that was suppose to be the 20 year short term solution.

This was collective community action, trying to stop this madness. Tories didn't care, Labour didn't care much either. Motorways running thru the inner city, how mad!

That was going to be part of a inner London motorway only that and a section in east london was built ,the area now and those houses are worth a fortune ,when it was being built the area around grove was a dump full of poor people so the authorities didn’t care it wouldn’t be built now because it’s now dirt after area ,but still with pockets of the no so well off grenfell tower is just to the south of the west way ,should of put the road or still should underground and reconnect the area in Hammersmith we have the flyover
