Queen Alia was the third wife of King Hussein (Jordan). She founded the Office of the Queen of Jordan and gave it an active and public role. The active role she took in Jordan has been emulated by her successors. She financed social development projects, placing particular emphasis on women and children. She often made surprise visits to hospitals and national institutions, aiming to raise service standards and help people to help themselves. In her drive to ensure that children from impoverished backgrounds received their right to education, she fostered close ties with schools such as the Schneller School for Orphans, which took many of the street children that Queen Alia sent there. Her commitment to improving social services continued throughout her lifetime and was still pursued in her name after her death, when King Hussein ensured the continuation of the many educational scholarships given in her honor. Alia's love of the arts and literature inspired the establishment of libraries throughout the country, including one at the Central Bank of Jordan and another in the King Hussein Medical City. Her interest in the arts led to the founding of the Haya Cultural Centre for Children, the National Folklore Troupe and the Alia Art Gallery. It was also instrumental in conceiving the Jerash Festival for the Arts. In 1974, Alia called for women to be granted the right to vote and be elected for parliament. Alia died in a helicopter crash in 1977 at age 28.

@rutisharoni9249 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry but I don't believe the helicopter crash was an accident: In my opinion it was done on purpose. Let's not forget the Jordanian people who, with each of his marriages had something against the bride; Tony Gardener was too European and Aliya was too much of a commoner and because king Hussein did not agree to divorce her they found some other way to get rid of her. I surely hope that king Abdullah will live a more peaceful live than his father, and also his half sister Haya but that is a different story. By the way, we never hear anything about Haya's brother. Regards from the Middle East. 🐪

In her own way she had a advantage that the other Brides didn't have She was already born a Muslim where the others "Converted" and she may have known what was expected of her. I'm sure she was very happy at how Alia, Ali & Abir turned out and made her very proud. Can you imagine how challenging it must have been for him to be King at 18.
@incumbentvinyl9291
@incumbentvinyl9291 Жыл бұрын
What was expected of her, or any other wife, had nothing to do with religion. They're marrying a monarch, which isn't like marrying a civilian. A heir apparent is constantly schooled to be the next monarch. Becoming King has its challenges regardless of age, but he was most certainly prepared for it since birth.

I respect him for divorcing his wives instead of accumulating them.....it is more honest that way. He fell for a newscaster during the end of his life, as he was married to Noor. @@sunnyhill5119 I agree with everything you said. Queen Alia's tragic death broke King Hussein's heart. My friend, who was living in Cairo, Egypt at the time, recalled how all the Egyptians were so heartbroken for the King when Alia died so tragically and so young. He recalled how all the Egyptian television journalists, especially the women, were so sad for the King, especially when they showed how King Hussein had tears in his eyes when he spoke about Queen Alia. Had she lived longer, I believe that Alia would have accomplished great things in Jordan. Queen Alia was the only wife who really had the most in common with King Hussein, in ALL aspects of life; emotionally and culturally. @YousefHaddad90
@YousefHaddad90 5 жыл бұрын
Bianca Hotca it is possible but that would not have been the reason Hussein had; he was by far the most west-friendly head of state at the time. Jordanian modern culture is poorly documented, unfortunately. This was after a war filled phase starting in 1967, culminating in Jordan in 1970 during what is called as Black September. Egypt and Jamal Abdulnaser were huge regionally and commanded public support in all nations, and Hussein with his west friendly demeanor, flirting with ideas of peace with Israel on a long term basis angered the rest. Hussein has been occasionally branded as some sort of spy by pan Arab nationalists, and with England’s role in establishing the state of Israel, England’s aggression against Egypt during the Suez crisis and the recent emergence of Jordan from black September’s bloody phase, the assassination of the Jordanian PM Wasfi AlTal in Cairo, Egypt by Palestinian militant groups who would then be set free by Egyptian courts almost immediately afterwards, all of this shows Abdulnasers influence regionally and how this would reflect on Hussein being what he is with a more global/liberal vision comparing to those around him. Quite the character, this guy.
