I love the Dart.Because my dad used to take me to grey stones for a day out when I was little via the Dart. And I like the iconic green livery!

Very nice footage! I'd love to go to Ireland someday and check out IE/DART. The network seems to be well maintained, and there's (at least from what I can tell watching this video) a bit less vandalism than here in Germany regarding the stations and trains, thank goodness. What I DO notice though is a lot of very loud clacking noises when trains go over turnouts/switches. Must be very old tracks. I hope IE will eventually electrify the corridors to Cork and Galway and Northwards to Belfast in the near future

Hope you do come and visit us in Ireland, you should try out our mainline service trains which are very modern and extremely well maintained. Cya, take care

Maybe some of the noise is because trains in Ireland use a gauge bigger than standard gauge, making the corners sharper

Excellent film. But, there is a typo at 4' 58" says "Pease," instead of Pearse. I was at school in Dun Laoghaire (CBC Monkstown, 1979-80), just before the DART was set up. (We lived in Killiney). It was the old orange and black CIE ("Cycling Is Easier") noisy diesel locomotives, back then.

What does the train say as it starts moving and states the next stop? I took the Dart from Malahide to Pearse and just couldn't make it out.

I'm not sure about VIC, but I know for a fact that the first railways in SA were first designed by an engineer from the railways in Ireland, and brought their enthusiasm for broad gauge over with him. I'm afraid I can't remember name of the person or the source, but it was quite an interesting read. I'm not sure why VIC adopted the same gauge, but might well have been an uncharacteristic act of foresight by the state railways, with a view to inter-operability in the future, expecting it to become a wider standard. Ironically SA is now using 25kv AC for their electrification project, thus breaking the standard with VIC and NSW (though to be fair both WA and QLD use 25kv AC as well, so there is some degree of logic there, and it has become the de-facto global standard, so makes rolling stock cheaper)

I remember when they were first introduced and were really exciting and new. Nowadays they are dirty, uncomfortable, full of graffiti and goodness knows what smeared on the windows.
