I am from the region where this movie came from. There is another epic movie called bahubali by the same director in 2 parts. You might like both of them and also his movie “eega” which is the revenge story of a fly. The other movies from the recent times you can watch from this region are “syera narasimha reddy” it’s a story based on the true events of the first ever rebellion against the British. Infact he was beheaded as punishment coz of his revolt and they hung his head at the beginning of the town to reach a Lesson to Indians not to go against British empire. You can watch Vikram, super deluxe, Karnan , super deluxe, Vikram Rona, etc in the recent Time which are tamil movies

Jenny was the one who gave Bheem the blue print of jail so that he could infiltrate and rescue Ram, and she was the only comic relief in the movie , The Indian movies are emotionally heavy and usually long than Western standards So we use comic scene to save viewers from emotional exhaustion , Most of the time comic scenes are not much have to do with the core story of the movie but it enhances the experience of watching movie. More like when a well made dish is presented creatively it elevates the experience but it doesn't changes the taste Most of the times.

It's exactly how (Alluri) RamaRaju used to dress himself when he was leading the freedom struggle in our region Andhra Pradesh, India in 1920s Just google his name, you'll see. And if you think the British were shown too much villianish, that's because that ugly history of the British is never taught in the west. We know how our ancestors suffered in those times, millions died of starvation due to artificial famines (worst way to die, its a continuous torture for weeks and months seeing all the weeker people of your family die infront of you). For a hint, it was no less than what the Nazi did.

@@KABIGON4445カビゴン The characters for the 'story' represent only the real freedom fighters. The other representations are only limited to enhance particular scenes. In some scenes like "fighting while carrying on shoulders", it's Ram & Hanumam. Some posters of the movie where RamaRaju commands or guides Bheem shows them as Krishna & Arjun. But, the main representations of the characters are the real-life freedom fighters. Like in Bahubali, Sivudu (Mahendra Bahubali) is named after shiva, his first song in the movie is all about describing the power and greatness of lord Shiva, that doesn't make the character an inspiration of lord Shiva. The British were actually worse than shown in the movie if you talk to any old people... Man made famine etc.. Bheem and Ram are Hindu scriptures characters but these were real freedom fighters during British era. Yes the director definitely chose these two freedom fighters out of thousands for a reason. There are lot of references from Ramayana and even a shlok from Bhagavad Geeta in the movie. One of the song also talks about lord Rama. And calling it myth again and again sounds disrespectful. The movie is really symbolic and dramatic but that's the thing to love about it. There are barely any movies today without any cinematic mistakes. Somehow, even the story being kinda cliche still doesn't bore you. The dance part is just the women actually enjoying something new which was preached by the "two Indian males" after a boring ass ball dance.

Hey Jared, the references to Hindu myths are cultural rather than religious. Ramayana (where the reference for Ram's orange archer costume comes from) is a cultural icon in India (and in SE Asia). Scenes from Ramayan are used as meme in India, mainstream TV has their own versions of Ramayan playing on TV. This is primarily an Indian movie made for Indian audience and folks who aren't from India need to realize that when they venture into Indian cinema.

RRR is epic and it’s emotionally charged from start to end which is something Hollywood has become allergic to lately where every serious moment is turned into a cringy ass joke

I will say that a lot of racist British people do behave in evil "cartoonish" ways. When I was a kid we had British neighbours that once called us"black-skinned" as an insult and they would throw stones at the stray dog we were feeding whenever they saw it and refer to it as "bloody dog". Keep in my mind this dog was friendly and didn't bother anyone. Another one treated us like servants and constantly acted like she owned everything. They also had some good qualities as well but blatant racist behaviour was obvious.

One of the best RRR reviews in terms of analysis. As for Jenny's character, you're partly right, there was (and still is) a phenomena of mixed-ethnicity couples in Britain facing persecution (and prosecution at some points prior). The freedom of movement, dance, colour, expressiveness (including sexual) of former colonized cultures and people were often cited as reasons for such attractions, as a counterpoint to 'proper, white, British decorum". It was yet another form of oppression. It still is the dominant narrative. There's lots of documentaries on it. And that's exactly how the British spoke, still do if you've ever watched clips from their parliament or debates.

1. Ram is not a mythical character. He is the foundation of Indian history. 2. Jenny actually helped Bhima in the end to help him enter the prison where Raju was kept.

You are right about Jenny and the English women's role in the Naatu Naatu song. They tried to appeal to the Indian audience but global audience will find it cringy. You cannot compare Holocaust with artificial famines created by the British but they were just as evil in their own way.

It was not only the because of the holy thread that Ram discovers that Bheem is the man he is looking for, but that was the final confirmation. The first doubt that Ram had in that same scene was when Ram sees that Bheem knows the about the antivenom of the poison. Second, when Bheem asks for dhutra (antivenom), which is a holy flower of Shiva, Bheem goes and pray in front of Shiva in a temple beside them. But as per Ram's knowledge, Bheem is Muslim and not Hindu. And the third one was obviously the holy thread.

Please do a review on the Sandman. Is it good? Is it too performatively 'woke'? I am torn between both opinions as it seemed both could be true. There's also much to say, it seems, about how when authors updated their work, they became more predictable than they were when they first produce it. Makes me wonder what's the politics of that. As always, I trust you to be giving the most nuance responses for this.

People from Hollywood are talking about things they can learn from this and so are people from Bollywood (Hindi film industry) as even that industry is resting on it's laurels like Hollywood is. In 2022, each of the four south Indian regional film industries produced at least one pan Indian high earning films (some like Telugu film industry and kannada film industry producing multiple). So, bollywood which used to at one point be the primary cinema Industry of India is wondering why all of this is happening and what can be learnt from it all.
