thanks I grew up near NYC branch line. Mostly coal at that time in late 50s til 70s they used pairs of RS2 s and some other stuff from time to time. Once 3 days before Christmas I saw 4 F3s and the gave me a ride in the lead unit. I was about 12 never forget it.

Despite its shortcomings, I'd nominate the Pug Nose as the best-looking of all hood diesels ❤

The reason that the Belt Railway of Chicago purchased the C-424s was that EMD refused to add extra weight to GP-35s. Alco didn't and got the order and thus BRC owned the heaviest Alco 4 axle centuries produced. Another oddity of the BRC's C-424s was that due to the high wheel wear that they would achieve as they were used exclusively in slow speed heavy drag freight service they were equipped with steam engine style tires that would be replaced periodically by sweating them on to the wheel core.

you should do a video on the CNW huron SD alcos in the 70s they had some of the best alcos around the rs36 and the rs3ms rebuilt by alco with an rs11 long hood. i made one in HO scale out of two atlas models

Some engineers didn't like these because the 26 airbrake was right in front of the engineer. It was a little awkward for running backwards when switching.

I’m curious what references you can cite regarding then RS27’s being slippery? D&H has RS3m’s with 2000hp and we’re also considered slippery but I’ve never found any references that say the RS27’s were the same.

Cps fared better than cns c424s

I think in CN's case it was because they had ordered them a year later than CP and unlike CP the CN was receiving GP40's instead of GP35's as GM kept modifying the offerings and so you now had 2400HP vs 3000HP in a 4 axle model which may have made the C424 in CN's eyes as an awkward HP rating even though it was clearly the better unit when compared to the GP35's which CN had originally tested along side the C424. Looking at the date of the release of the C430 in America you have to wonder if MLW missed the boat by not offering the idea to CN to purchase the updated model instead as GM did with the GP40.I myself rode in CP C424 4207 back in 1996 and it is a memory from my early 20's that I will cherish forever.

It's kind of funny how GE killed ALCO because ALCO's used GE electrical gear from alternators to contactors to traction motors....🤔🤔
