Knowing that there were gale force winds why wasn't the start delayed????

I have sailed/raced for 40 years. I have seen more boom/head injuries than any other type. I have ALWAYS had my boats rigged with a permanent ‘boom preventer’ … that can be clipped on in seconds whenever the boom goes out or is gybed. It really is no trouble and never gets in the way. When clipped on and winched tight … we can accidentally gybe in any conditions and sail it out in a few seconds. It gives such confidence to helms and crews and, this in itself, does wonders to our downwind performance. I have always argued that it should be a mandatory fitting to ALL serious sailboats!!!😎🤢

Yes, just not in gear.

The boat which retired due to engine failure probably used the engine to create electricity for their motor winches and other stuff.
