Child of severely bad divorced parents here: The OP of the first story is absolutely the AH. The daughter is 15, she is old enough to make her own decisions and figure out who she wants to spend time with. OP’s “reasons” for not allowing her daughter to go to the party are nothing but vindictive and malicious. OP is using her child as a tool to get back at the father. I spent many events in which my divorced parents disagreed on time, did things that were vindictive, and then cops got called. It gave me PTSD. Going down a road like this will only give the daughter trauma. OP seriously needs to reconsider her choices before her daughter starts to hate her.

So here is the thing that I think was overlooked on the first story. The daughter is FIFTEEN!! That is well beyond the age where she is legally able to decide which parent she wants to be with DESPITE custody. If she wanted to live with her father (which will end up happening is mom keeps going down the road she's on), the there is very little OP can do short of proving Dad is unfit. Going to court will have the judge most likely abide by the daughters wishes. When that girl turns 18, she's gonna go NC or LC with mom, just wait and see.

SAME!! I think the replies to that first story leave out that stupid stuff like this almost ALWAYS flows both ways. The dad knew what he was doing when he snuck his daughter out of school, and it was just as petty. They need to take it to court and leave their teenage daughter ENTIRELY out of it. People mention that she’s a teenager so she knows what she wants, but she’s still a CHILD. This reminded me of the well-known yet hypocritical Chinese Idioms: "Parents can do no wrong" and "Respect the aged and the wise". 2nd Story: Dude got a humiliating lesson in the difference between learning about something secondhand (reading, being told by other people) and learning firsthand (experiencing for yourself). Being male, one of the first things I was told about periods is that unless you're a doctor (and even then, there are limits) is that you *DO NOT* act like you know more about them than the women who experience them. And that periods are like _literal_ snowflakes: not every woman experiences them the exact same way. I'm going to take a guess that this story took place in the U.S. and that the guy's parents never signed that sex ed note when he was younger.
@Avrysatos
@Avrysatos 2 жыл бұрын
There's a caveat to that snowflake line that might be helpful for you. One case where you should say something is if they're in extreme pain. I'm talking they're curling up in pain. A distressingly high number of women don't realize that isn't normal. There are several medical conditions that can cause it and they're, to varying degrees, treatable. It probably did take place in the US.

This, man! I got told numerous times by my PE teacher at school to "just move more and the cramps will go away", but I have a family history of endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition where the uterus lining becomes inflamed during shedding/a period, and then doesn't heal right. My mother actually developed ovarian cancer and cysts due to the scar tissue rotting underneath her inflamed uterus lining (thankfully is now cancer free). I had to stay home for 2-3 DAYS at a time at the start of my periods because I couldn't move at all due to the pain. Eventually I got put on mephanamic acid to ease the cramps, before being put on the pill to manage anaemia cause by my heavy periods. Thankfully I don't get periods anymore, but I do still get the cramps (less so), and being told to "just move" when I was doubled over crying from pain? Bad move teach

For the second story: This reminds me of a HILARIOUS convo I had with a coworker. This dude I didn't like much, let's call him Samson, was out for a few days. We naturally thought he was playing hooky, because the guy had attendance issues, but eventually like 4 days later, he returned. Turned out he had a kidney stone. Again, I didn't like the dude much, so I only heard it secondhand, but I wouldn't wish a kidney stone on my worst enemy. I expressed my condolences to the coworker who relayed the information to me, and prepared to go on my merry way. Then the coworker who told me said that Samson told him "yeah, kidney stones are way more painful for men, because the opening of the penis is smaller than the opening of the vagina." I DIED LAUGHING. The coworker that relayed the information is like... in his 20s, so that's already pretty bad -- BUT SAMSON WAS 38 HE WAS 38 AND THOUGHT THAT *WOMEN PEED OUT OF THEIR VAGINAS* AND NOBODY EVER BOTHERED CORRECTING HIM. To this day it remains the funniest shit I've ever heard, and I still think about it every time I see him now. That was about 5 years ago, so Samson is now in his early to late 40s. I wonder if he still thinks women pee out of their vaginas. 😂😂😂

So yea, the mother is the asshole here. And I am seeing where the divorce came from, she clearly has some control issues here. There was no other reason for her to deny the dad's time with their kid other than "it wasn't his day." And if there were some dire reasons for not wanting them to spend time together, then I really don't think she would post it on a public forum it wouldn't be a question.

Some states it's 14, others it's 15 or 16, and it's possible some states may require 18, but I haven't heard of any. Individual states have the right to make their own laws on this. I have heard of a custody case (on mobile, cannot research and link, sorry) one parent in one state, other in another, and each had custody hearings in their own state. Needless to say, the judges didn't agree, and multiple lawsuits came later. I think the kid's opinion and wishes should always be considered, with an independent party (child psychologist, or other specialist) giving a report to the court. My opinion, not what law says or requires. Too many children are at the mercy of their parent's "covert war."

@@driversuz44 It's a specific term that was created to explain a very specific behaviour that occurs due to the specific ways in which men are socialised in this society, where the man's credibility is always assumed and the woman's credibility is always doubted first, which leads to events where a man often makes assumptions of the way things work and -- without further guidance, pushback, or learning -- assumes his assumption is correct. It becomes "man-splaining" when he takes this assumption and insists it is correct *to a female expert on the subject who says otherwise based on her expertise* (whether that is "expertise" by official credentials or "expertise" by personal experience). It is the second part that makes it specifically "man-splaining". Yes, anyone can do something this obnoxious, but the term "man-splaining" arose because the overwhelmingly sexist values of our society make this behaviour most common in a specific way, in a particular dynamic, often enough that it was named. It's just how we have all sorts of chemical reactions that occur, but we only give the name "oxidization" to a specific kind of chemical reaction, and only that one. This isn't "picking on men" or "unnecessarily gendering behaviour" -- this is giving a name to a social phenomenon that occurs because of sexism. A man explaining something (even when done obnoxiously) isn't automatically "man-splaining" unless it is to a female expert and the topic is her area of expertise. And no, "woman-splaining" isn't a thing, because women are generally socialised to doubt their own power and expertise (see: imposter syndrome). A woman who explains a topic to a male expert in that topic is the same thing we call a man explaining a topic to a male expert in that topic: an asshole. And that is not a gendered behaviour.

I'm a bit torn on the first one. OP had every right to decline giving up her daughter on her day with her, even if it was the father's birthday, but she also handled the situation VERY poorly, at a minimum she didn't seem to take the daughters wishes or well bring into account AT ALL. He handled it VERY poorly as well though, by illegally taking her without even notifying OP. Just bad behavior stacked on top of bad behavior, all at the expense of the daughter.

My exwife has been using our children as a weapon and gone out of her way to make that I don’t get to see our children. She has lied about me, made false allegations, her and her mother have poisoned the children’s minds. The worst part is that my exwife is racist and sexist. Her and her mother have repeatedly said that anytime our son had made a mistake, they’d say, “It’s because of your Y chromosome”. Because of her actions, I haven’t seen our children for ten years. Our son did try to communicate with me 4 years ago. Me exwife went through all of his social media and blocked me from all of his social media so that I wouldn’t talk to him.

I notice the first person didn't even make an attempt to justify why she wouldn't let her daughter go to the party. Like, you'd think she would point out some other obligation or plans with other family, but no, she just "has her reasons" which based on the story would be "I'm vindictive and selfish"

Story 3 where OPs brother is massively irresponsible and just dumps his son on others expecting them to care for his son? He asked you to speak to this woman, right? I’d call her up and be completely honest with her, that he dumped his kid on you, that he literally snuck into your house behind your back as you were showering, and just dumped his kid, knowing you had work. That he refused to pick up his kid until threatened, that he expected you to not show up to work and avoid responsibilities because he demanded it and because he’s irresponsible. I’d call her up and be completely honest about the kind of guy he is, because he would deserve it. Maybe then he’ll learn a lesson, but I highly doubt it, he needs to be held responsible tho.

Before even finishing the first story and hearing any responses: Yes, YTA. Your ex and your daughter *both* wanted for your daughter to be there at his birthday. You can't complain about them not respecting your wishes when you're *blatantly* disrespecting your daughter's. Your daughter is not your property. EDIT: Oh, and all the moreso because said daughter is 15. At that point she *absolutely* can decide for herself which parent she'd rather hang out with. If she were, like, five, OP may have had a tiny bit of a point, but at age 15? Get over yourself, OP.

So a couple of things I'd like to state, 1) others are arguing this, but cause she's a minor 15 or not the fact that they have a court agreement means that the dad technology kidnapped his daughter & if OP wanted to she could call the cops, he gets arrested & could loss custody, getting only supervised visitation rights, 2) someone said that OP said in an edit that her reasons which yes there petty, but I believe the ex brought it onto himself is that OP had asked him to take the daughter on one of her days that she had off, but he refused, I believe saying something about sticking to the court agreement, I believe there was more I was gonna write, but have just forgotten it sorry, it's 7am here, I just got off work at the (h e l l) (h o l e) that is Amazon Weerhouse at around 4 & I should go to bed now, good night.

First story is giving me so many flashbacks. My mom wouldn't let me have supper at my dad's place (where I got off the bus after school), and would instead make him drive me home *immediately*, where I would have to sit, sometimes for hours, oftentimes alone because my brother would go to his friends' houses after school, until she got home. All because she was wildly jealous of how comfortable I was with my dad and (especially) my stepmom. I love her to bits, and also she comes up a lot in therapy. 🙃

Honestly, I recognize that sex education in most U.S. states is an absolute shitshow, but these days we have wikipedia and tons of great sex education websites and dudes are running out of excuses for thinking that we bleed from the ass and pee from the vagina. If you ever intend to have important... vagina-owners (??) in your life in any capacity--partners, kids, even subordinates at work based on some of these horror stories--then you _need_ to know the very basics. At least so you don't end up telling someone to "just hold it" or something. It's not your fault you weren't taught this in school by reasonable adults but please just invest the thirty minutes this takes.
