It's a fixed timer, they mentioned it on a podcast at a later date. Also I'm pretty sure most tasers are, to prevent overkill on whatever is hit. Once that trigger is pulled it's 5 seconds and stop.

There are two types of "shocks" with a taser once it has been deployed. There is a "timed" shock where the user taps the trigger and it sends out a continuous shock for a short period. Then there is the manual shock where the user can hold the trigger for a prolonged shock if necessary. Like remington mentioned above, they discussed it in a later Podcast (I think in an Off Topic one) where Jack said he had only used the "timed" shock out of fear of shocking Michael too much. He said once he hit the trigger, he took his hand off the trigger and just let the timed shock go because he didn't want to seriously hurt Michael. Jeremy even said something like he got worried that Jack was holding the trigger down when Michael was trying to tell him to stop...Jeremy said he panicked a little and was about to tell Jack to stop, not knowing it was a timed shock.

If you are going to be a police officer or some sort of MP (military police) I think, part of your training is you have to be both tazed and pepper sprayed so you know how it feels and know how to react in the event a suspect happens to get their hands on your equipment and attempt to use it against you.

I did nine years of psychology in university I can explain in great detail the similarities and the differences of the two from an academic standpoint.
