I agree with Gavin on this one: why chat to a person at a bar if it's not going anywhere, especially when you're already taken. Whenever another guy tries to strike a conversation with me when I'm at the bar by myself (usually waiting for my boyfriend to get there), I have very short responses and don't lead any conversation because I'm not there for that. Same with what Gavin is thinking, you're at the bar with a friend -- you're there with and for the friend -- and if that's all your intention was for going out, then it is what it is.

I think another reason for Locks on the Panama canal is to get around the issue that the tides present. If the canal was completely straight/level without locks then it would make it extremely difficult to use and to keep ships in there. The strong water currents could also pose problems for travelling through the canal. I don't know any of this and have not looked any of this up, it's just my thoughts on the matter.
