Looks cool and that, but once you go OPNSENSE/PFSENSE you can never go back to shitty gimmick routers.
@BenReese
@BenReese 2 жыл бұрын
As a proud pfSense user, I have to say that I'm glad these "gimmick" routers exist. I still need something to recommend to my family/friends that doesn't include a 2-week introduction to networking and installing Unifi access points. I'd much rather just say "go buy this space ship". The USB / RNDIS backup is still something I'm trying to nail down on Synology. I kinda did it on Open-WRT, but I still need to figure out a solution for at home.
@Jonteponte71

@@BenReese Exactly. And once installing it, you are also their network support contact for life. So i prefer installing Synology routers and enabling Quickconnect on them so I can support them remotely at any time. Works like a charm so far! (As in I haven't heard anything since I installed them in two homes so far. Plus my own installation of course...)

@@Jonteponte71 I'm considering putting a Raspberry Pi with Tailscale at my parents house for easy remote access/support. that's what I used at church and it works great! May even be able to use an old Android phone 🤔

@@BenReese I need to look into Tailscale as well. But for my parents setup I think it will be secure enough to attach a USB-disk to their router and then use that for my off-site backup through quickconnect. Turns out the money I spent is paying itself back :)

I bought one of these a couple of years ago to replace my Asus router. The Asus, Netgear, and all of the rest that I have used over the years have admin interfaces that are positively claustrophobic compared to the Synology. The Safe Access app on the Synology is a huge feature that nobody else seems to have. Setting up users and filters is great. And so much more. I don't use the mesh feature but I do have my slightly older Synology 2600 router set in bridge mode for better coverage.

Mobile Data via USB as a failover isn't really a new thing, been on Modem/Routers going back years. Still have a FRITZ!Box Modem/Router that does it from 2009, they still support and update it too. Telstra (ISP in Aus) includes a router that has 4G failover built-in for free as a part of their service, albeit at fairly slow speeds.

Most of the features you talked about with SRM (hotspot failover/ LAN 1 failover) can be found in both the MR2200 and the RT2600 if someone doesn’t need WiFi 6 or can’t afford 300 dollars but wants to use SRM. Another neat feature is that you could use SRM and ad plugged in hard drive to back up an existing NAS.

Two more things I like! First is the ability to leverage 5 SSID’s which I believe provide a wired and wireless VLAN ability to isolate IoT from compute devices. Second thing is the previous router RT2600ac had a $129 MR2600ac Mesh WiFi Router to integrate as a satellite with the man router. I expect (hoping) to see an equivalent MR6600ax Mesh WiFi Router. BTW, you are the first I’ve seen mention the mobile internet backup option. Kudo’s! 👍🏻 I love that idea, but of course I live in a canyon with one bar cellular, thus have to use a cellular booster via my ISP. 😥

Finally setup my Synology Mesh 2x RT660ax’s & 1x RT2600ac. With 3 Syno NAS’s I “LOVE” SRM! One thing I like most is the VLAN. Up to 5 networks and you can tag WiFi SSID’s with wired networks! 😱 The weathering is an awesome option. Also, I think I’m gonna try the VPN Server too. Oh, and the fact that Parental Controls are free where Netgear wants a paid subscription is a definite value add. Just another reason to love Synology! 😎👍🏻

I have a Synology DS1819+ NAS and I think the similarity of this router's interface would make for a very nice environment between the two devices. One other advantage would be only having to use one website to support two devices. I actually run dual Plex Servers one on the DS1819+ and one on an older PC. The Plex Server on the PC is the primary server with the one on the DS1819+ as a secondary/failover & backup of my media. I have a 5 port 10Gbe Mikrotik switch that these two are connected to. I wonder if Plex could be manually installed on the router through the package center but Plex may not a version for this purpose. For Synology Plex has two versions one for 6.x and one for 7.x operating systems.

Jestem w szoku. Nawet dzisiaj potrzebuję wprowadzić te ustawienia do routera RT6600ax aby połączyc się z internetem. VPI:0 , VCI:35 , PAP/CHAP , VC-MUX , ANNEX A takie dane podaje ISP.

I just watched you're review, and you mentioned if there was any other router that does all things you mentioned this synology router does then put it in the comments... well... every feature found (failover, aggregation, USB tethering, mesh capability, 2.5G WAN and LAN ports, etc) can be found on the Asus RT-AX86U. I've been using the Asus router for a little over a year now and have never had any issues with it. ;)

WAN speeds will be increasing significantly in the next few years as FTTH becomes more common. If I wanted to pay for it I could get 10Gb FTTH tomorrow under a business plan. As it stands though it'll be a couple of years before those speeds move over to the residential plans in the small town of 4K people in Nebraska that I live in. I have a 4GLTE backup connection at home right now as the Verizon MiFi is only $17/mo. You can also get 4G backup with a cellphone by using a travel router in client mode with the cell hotspot turned on. TP-Link makes some of them. My parents did this for years.

My Asus router has all of these features plus an additional USB3 and does it at a lower cost (~$250). Also it has the option to aggregate 2 1Gbps ports for WAN and use its 2.5Gbps port to output to a switch to provide what I think is a much more flexible and realistic setup in most homes. I combine this router with Qnap's 2.5Gbps switch to give my house blazing connections where they can be utilized (my dual 2.5Gbps Qnap NAS for example), and the remaining 3 1Gbps ports on the router to feed other switches, lower bandwidth stuff, etc. Plus AIMesh for inexpensive crazy capable mesh networking.

That ability is like built in to I think every ASUSwrt router... Both the 2nd WAN over a LAN Port as well as the USB 4G/5G LAN On Android/iPhone or a USB modem though I'm sure there's some that work some that don't. I use the old RT-AC68U & use this feature too often to avoid the extra charge for going over a data cap. That's not a crazy feature... As far as the Mesh network... ASUSwrt does that too... With pretty much any other ASUSwrt Router... They have a great App, can even be added to Home Assistant to monitor speeds & current speed usage. Have you never used an ASUSwrt router? Their regular OS is based on Tomato, & if you want even more control The ASUS Merlin software gives you much more & works on just about everything. It also natively support OpenVPN

I need a new router because my network is getting fairly large and I have a cheapo TP-Link dual band. Shopping around this one checks a lot of boxes for me. 1) Tri band (for dedicated high throughput like wireless VR), 2) prosumer level OS with what seems like a good VPN suite, VLAN and client isolation which is great for making a separate IoT network etc. 3) Non-ricer hot rod, PrO GaMeR aesthetic that appeals to children and basic dumb dumbs.

Jason, it's crazy how you and I are almost duplicate Tech lovers, it's amazing how many things you've worked your way through that I was just attempting to do, or have already done. So besides some entertaining/educating content why? Why, when you're already using much superior setup using your Unifi hardware. Also you should check to see if it's available to you, T-Mobile's home Internet is way faster and cheaper than starlink. You can try it for 15 days for free, and if you don't like it, return their modem and its no charge. I don't know what your 5G is like down there close to Wichita,but here in KC I get 400+ down and around 40+ up. I know Internet from satellites is really cool, and once they have a mobile solution for people who move around all the time (Like RVers) they're super expensive when there are probably many more options to choose from.

That doesn't make any sense. 2.5Gbps on the WAN side means that if you have 10 devices all capable of using & for some reason simultaneously trying to use 1Gbps they each get 250Mbps instead of each getting 100Mbps if your WAN is 1Gbps... While having 2.5Gbps on LAN only improves local transfer speeds & if you really need that you're probably a business
