All religions depend on poverty, submission, superstition, fear, to flourish. The dismal outlook regarding employment or unemployment sent boys and girls to seek security in convents and seminaries Many were not suited for the religious life so they took their frustration out on the pupils and children under their care. Perversion is another issue but it still steamed from the same root cause
