Thanks feckers. Up here in Bangor, Co Down I can't get RTE FM. Either broadcast a decent signal or go back to MW.

@thepod96 RTE Radio had been on FM for years. It was kept on MW for Irish diaspora in the UK.

Ronan Collins's theme music is the same as John Dunn's on BBC Radio 2 over here in the UK!

I used to be able to hear it quite clear in Central Scotland when it was on 567kHZ.

@@europa2000man Every night at 6pm RTÉ winds the power down on LW to 150kW and reception worsens with night-time reception fading and whistling to the strains of Algerian Radio on the same frequency spoiling RTÉ Radio 1 on LW.

@@anthonyperkins7556 Don't think it is running 150kw now even in the daytime. I'd guess 100kw at the most for the day service, so no idea what night is.

I like the O'Donnell Abú interval signal tune that they play. Do they still play it every morning?

No kidding. I always get this mixed vibe of KBS Korea and RTÉ Ireland, just like I do with NPR America and CBC Canada.

This was RTE's biggest mistake, LW should have closed down instead. The MW signal was far superior in strength and quality.

An awesome closure to 82 years of AM broadcasting. Of course, in many parts of the world, AM radio is becoming a thing of the past. Years ago, growing up in Beantown, AM radio drove the music, news and more on the radio. Now, it's all being taken over by FM, the internet, DAB, satellite, and HD radio. What's next-wireless radio on cell phones?

Seemingly, over in Norway, they have completely closed down all the VHF/FM radio transmissions on all National and nearly all of the Local radio stations. So FM radio too is becoming a thing of the past in some places in the world. In Ireland, there is only one Medium Wave radio station left and that's a religious radio station called Spirit Radio. Other than that, the only other stations you can just about pick up is BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru (A Welsh Language Station), BBC Radio Ulster, Absolute Radio and Talk Sport. Those are all British and Northern Irish radio stations still broadcasting on MW which can be received from Ireland. There are still some Medium Wave stations in Continental Europe that you can just about pick up from France and Spain.
