Ellen Divers is an independent Design Theorist, Researcher and Educator whose current focus is the use of color for human comfort in architectural design. She has spent the last decade researching and developing a 21st century paradigm of color psychology, a topic which is central to both her writings and conference presentations.
She holds degrees in Psychology, Education, Design and Studio Art which offer a variety of lenses through which to analyze the often elusive process of color design. Her goal is to provide designers with rational evidence-based tools for making effective color choices. She has successfully piloted a color course at UT Austin and her ambition is to see it become an integral part of color education, as well as make it available for professionals. When she isn’t thinking about color, she has her hands in clay at the Sertoma pottery studio in Raleigh.
In her talk, "Beyond Hue: 21st Century Psychology of Color," Divers explores the idea that color psychology is directly tied to whether a color is red, yellow, blue, etc. is so 20th century! This limited view of color psychology does not serve designers seeking to make evidence-based color decisions. 21st century psychology of color goes "beyond hue" and offers a framework for interpreting the meanings associated with all the colors, not just ROYGBV of the color wheel.
