"Stride piano" is a technique popularized by James P. Johnson and Fats Waller that involves the playing of bass chords with the left hand while playing melody (often improvised) with the right hand. Johnson was the master, and Fats was his disciple. Stephanie executes "stride" with great elegance and control.
@MrCrowebobby4 жыл бұрын
Great technique but a touch too soft and "polite" for me. Would have given 20 years of my life to have had her skill though.
@PiotrBarcz2 жыл бұрын
not quite the accurate description. Stride piano was an offshoot of ragtime where a march bass line in the left hand was played while a syncopated right hand melody was also played. Stride piano took this further by adding heavy improvisation over the right hand and dropping most of the 1 and 3 beat bass notes in the march bass line about an octave or two down imitating an upright bass. The octaves were almost always not present unless used for emphasis. The bass notes also followed the melody of the tune.

One of the great pianists around to-day, Frederick Hodges, once famously said of Stephanie, "She plays like a 300 pound black man." When you think about it, that's high praise indeed. And she has only got better over the years.

Si queréis , podeis comparar la interpretación que hace de "Liza" su propio autor (Gershwin) con la de S. Trick. Qué abismo infinito! Y, sin embargo, también Gershwin, componiendo, es, sencillamente genial. Dos maravillas¡
@17bobbyboy10 жыл бұрын
Yikes. To any pianists out there, listen to when she starts the stride rhythm about 1:16. She uses that sustain pedal so sparingly. She doesn't slop through anything at all. Rock solid left hand and right hand technique.

christ almighty. i started out tonight following the trail of earl bonie on clarinet and somehow wound up with stephanie... now i don't think i'll ever need to go anywhere else..... that might be a bit of an exaggeration but you know what i mean... she is something else again..... i mean, even the videos all seem to have a good quality of recording... all the numbers she plays seem to be 'good' numbers (that's gotta be subjective, surely).... and we've covered some years.... her hair is shorter in this vid than any I've seen so far and I saw a comment she's married now... yet it all seems to be of the same quality..... you don't get that much, following youtube vids of some performer... lovely, lovely, lovely....

@brabazon10 the lines are kind of loose when we refer to pianists from the 30s. Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, although being stride pianists, also used some boogie piano in their songs, and Art Tatum (as well as Teddy Wilson) often play with a more lyrical style that most people like to call "swing piano". I think that calling Art Tatum a stride pianist is really the best we can do, since that was one thing he seemed to do consistently for his career.

You might want to google "Harlem Stride" to find out a little more about the music style. Other famous Stride piano players who have recorded the piece include James P Johnson, Art Tatum, and Donald Lambert.

you're doing Art Tatum a disservice by calling him a stride pianist. He was plain n simple a pianist who just happened to be a genius, and didn't fit in to any particular genre. Stephanie Trick is one brilliant pianist who's carrying on the stride tradition.

I'm throwing away all of my recordings of players over 10 years old.Little kids play the best.You make up for the total lack of phrasing, by zillions of quick little notes.
@Huckabeezer14 жыл бұрын
Stephanie combines several playing styles in this piece....The stride part of her playing starts at 1:18. If you're familiar with James P. Johnson, the second half of this version should sound familiar to you from his late 1940's recordings. Steph is already one of the premier stride artists in the world....
