I will say this over and over again, the complexity Zuko and Azula and their development as characters throughout the series is immaculate! Azula was my favourite character along with Zuko when I was younger and they’re still my favourite. Yes, they’re both fucked up to some extent, Azula being the most fucked up of the two, but can you blame them? They’re a product of their environment and having a maniacal psychopathic dictator for a father would do that to a person.

Azula and Zuko are products of their environment, but remember that doesn't excuse their actions.

That scene where Azula almost falls into the house but recovers, whereas Zuko just runs in headfirst and trips off the edge is so symbolic of the personalities and attitudes of both of those characters. Little scenes like that completely make this show.

Some interesting things to note. For Toph, her parents treated her more like a doll than a person. She never experienced social interaction outside of beating those guys up in the fighting ring or being told what to do passively by her parents. So Toph has never dealt with people treating her as an equal before. And she's never dealt with conflict in a way that wasnt entirely passive (like with her parents) or aggressive (like the fights in the ring) Katara was trying to help by integrating Toph into their social dynamic when she asked her to help with the chores. But Toph never experienced that before, and lashed out at katara as a result. Katara comes from a very social close knit village. You integrate yourself in that community by working on the chores TOGETHER. So to katara, Toph offended her by refusing to take part in the group dynamic. Both lashed out and got frustrated because the other's world view didnt make sense to the other. Ultimately Toph's was the more ignorant, and once she opened herself to the group Katara was able to recognize her own failings to recognize what Toph was going through. Lots of growth all around!

True but it's also equally insulting for Katara to impose her views on Toph. There's nothing wrong with carrying her weight. In fact, she's blind and should not be doing shit like setting up tents and other chores. That's just not right.

@@billbill6094 I don't think that's really super relevant here. First of all she's 12, not like she really knows life all that well to be making these kinds of decisions. Secondly, even if you were right in your point, it doesn't supercede her literal blind condition. It's immoral for someone to ask a blind person to set up camp for them or assist in normal people activities. Even though Toph is incredible and can do those things doesn't mean she should. I'm also not saying you need to make her uncomfortable either by giving her any kind of treatment she doesn't want. However, there is a reality that we must adhere to and people should stay in their respective lanes.

Mentally awKwardMaknae I think her father is more evil. Like Zuko she wanted his respect and was less warm hearted. Since she was a kid being cruel was rewarded by her father. Zuko’s kindness was punished and seen as weak. That warps the mind. The way she acted towards the end of S3 shows me that she wasn’t pure evil. I don’t want to accidentally spoil by going into detail but yeah. My girl is more complex than that!

"Both?! I'M COMPLETELY CALM!!" Oh Katara xD Aang coming to Appa's defense really warmed my heart even though it was sort of bad he was yelling at Toph like that. Shows how much Appa means to him that he'd insert himself into the argument even though he's been trying to stay out of it for the most part. The Toph/Iroh scene also warmed my heart this episode! Mainly because more Iroh wisdom session and it showed that two people on opposing sides can be friends. Major props to Azula for taking advantage of Iroh when he let his guard down. I'm sure normally that would never happen on Iroh's end, but I suppose it just goes to show how Azula was really paying attention to every little thing despite being cornered. Appa MVP!!!

The only remnant of the civilisation of the air benders left outside of ruins and corpses is Appa, the only one he shares memories with from when his family and friends were still around. I'm continuously in awe of how no one on the show is really weak and they have some great non-benders like Sokka, Ty Lee, and Mai. I figured Toph and Katara would butt heads because of personality differences but also because of elemental differences. Toph is blunt, head on, and to the point. And remember in episode 6 she said that she never had friends. She's used to being around her parents who coddle her so it's an adjustment for everyone involved.

Azula is very persistent and ambitious. She knows how much it means to capture the Avatar.She followed him non stop.and Toph and katara are working on getting along. Toph left everything behind to teach aang Earth bending. And katara just didn't realize that at the moment. And Zuko was fought his sister to capture aang. Goes to show how much the world desperately needed Aang. And azulas skills is beyond amazing. She managed to fight off and avoid Aang,Iroh, Katara,sokka, Zuko,toph at once and never even took a blow. She is in fact one of the best fire benders in history outside of Zuko and iroh. And toph has the entire weight of teaching Aang earthebending,she's still new to the group and had never been on her own. Azula is the best fire Bender ever

He just didn't know which of the group was the most likely one, hence him trying to judge each for their level of strategic threat, the irony being that he ended up counting himself out of that equation - and paid the price.

I like that the series didn't wait to show the change Toph added to the team, because it's different with her around. But it clear Tooh doesn't really know how to associate with people, because being part of a group means _doing for the group_ and not just for yourself. I lightweight wanna blame Katara because she did keep picking at Toph every time they landed, but being stressed and sleep deprived can make anybody irritable. I know it does with me. 😂

Azula is definitely nasty lolllll it’s cool to see the hierarchy of fighting ability: Azula is a prodigy, Aang can almost give her a run for her money because he is a master of his element, Zuko is a great firebender against most people (but he can barely compete with Azula), .... and interestingly, Katara seems to be one of the only people able to get a shot in at Azula once in awhile .... not by pure bending proficiency alone, but if she can catch the princess by surprise and .... perhaps Azula is just not quite as comfortable against water?

Everyone's had that coworker who's like Toph, who feels everyone should do just as much as work as needed and what makes life unfair is when Team Mom Katara comes in and says everyone should do something to "ease the load" on the next person. I'm always the Katara. I'll automatically do just a tiny 5% of your job, almost everyday, but then one day I don't think to, and now the manager's standing dumbfounded in the middle of a problem and can't figure out why X didn't get done. It took me a long time to realize that being "helpful" isn't always best and if someone stocks their own station and gets their own supplies, it doesn't make them less of a team player than the person that grabs other's supplies, too.

I wanna point out how I disagree with everyone a little in this episode I feel Toph was selfish and should help and not antagonise katara when she's trying to make up or outright blame appa but explain how they are following them as it's not appas fault specifically, Katara while I agree with her, I find she should be calmer and kinder when talking to Toph as screaming at each other does nothing, Aang while I agree that Toph should not blame appa, he shouldn't of said what he said
