NEWS FROM ITTY.COM PRINTED ON FORMER TELETYPE CORPORATION MODEL 15 TELETYPEWRITER OWNED BY AT&T AT ONE TIME.
The TTY Source comes from ITTY, the link is 209.180.212.65:8000/listen.pls but you will need WINAMP player (or maybe some other) found here www.winamp.com/ to hear the tones and patch them via audio cable to a HAL ST-6000 Converter. The converter is connected to the TTY machine.
You can also receive FSK on HF frequencies, on a good, stable shortwave radio and feed the audio output directly to the converter (HAL ST-6000 or any box capable of TTY conversion). Frequencies listed here www.rtty.com/rt...
More on ITTY here www.rtty.com/it...

My father and I had a Model 15 like this back in the late 70's, we used it to receive ham radio RTTY transmissions. It was US Army Signal Corps surplus, weighed a ton, and ran like a champ despite being 40+ years old at the time. I can still smell the aroma of machine oil, warm grease and vintage ribbon ink.

Yikes, brings back not-entirely-happy memories of my career as a newspaper reporter in the 1980s... we had five of these (AP, UPI, and weather) running 24 hours a day, plus an AP Wirephoto machine (which made a scratchy sound that sounded like "oh boy oh boy oh boy".) Add police and fire scanners plus the voice of the managing editor complaining about the disheveled way the reporters dressed and you would have a complete soundscape of journalism's twilight years...

I had one of those in my bedroom when I was in High School back in the 60s. It was connected to my shortwave ham radio rig. I used it to converse with other hams around the country. Later, I worked as an Engineer at a radio station. A model 15 was how we got our news from the AP wire.

I spent six years as a newsman with UPI immediately out of college, in the heyday of teletype machines, in the pre-computer age. From 1968-70, I was on the UPI sports desk in New York City, in the NY Daily News building on E. 42nd Street, and I can still hear the never-ending clack-clack-clack of teletype machines lining the walls of the massive newsroom. I input hundreds of stories directly into a teletype over the years -- particularly at Albuquerque, Topeka, Austin and Little Rock -- frequently bypassing a typewriter entirely. By the time I began a 25-year career with The AP in 1978 at Dallas, not only the teletype but the typewriter was beginning to be a relic, giving way to computers.

When I was a teen my buddy and I rigged up a copper line between our homes and set up old crank telephones first, then added a model 19 asr at my house and a model 15 at his. My dad built a little circuit to turn the remote unit on whenever either unit was turned on. It was sooooo cool. And to think all of those machines were hauled to the dump years ago. Sure wish I had that stuff now!

WOWEE.... My dad was a telegraph operator for the Missouri Pacific for 28yrs. His office was just full of these teletype machines up until 1969 or '70. As a kid, i was mesmerized by the machinery and sounds. You had to SHOUT to be heard in his office area. Up until that time, there was still the wooden sounder-box for the telegraph key messages, btw. THANK YOU so much for posting this video. Wunderful ! I recall he used to complain about 'wire thieves' along the tracks too! All Aboard!

I had one that was my printer for a TRS80. I did a dump of a program once , went out and mowed the lawns, cleaned up part of garden and then faced my mother wrath having the house shake for hours. But lets face it, I have no problem understanding clock timing for a series printer. People do not believe me when I talk of adjusting the frequency with a tuning fork.

How cool is this. Had one of these machines back in the early '80's and ran 45 baud RTTY on a 2 meter RTTY repeater in Pinconning, MI. It was a riot. Used to love to take the cover off and watch all the moving parts. Also had a complete functioning Mod 28ASR but never got it on the air. It was geared for 100 wpm and I never got the 45 baud gears. Thanks for posting this video. Brought back a lot of great memories. 73, K8BZ

We have a paper folder in our print shop that when setup to do a specific type of fold, sounds exactly like a teletype. Had to pull up the video and play it alongside it folding and it's uncanny how similar the two are. Amazing it still works, but then again, things were made to last back then!

The TTY in this case, comes from an internet source called ITTY. Link in the video discription. The tones from ITTY are stream out through an application called WINAMP also downloadable (link in main description). I then patch from my laptop audio output to a TTY converter. In my case, I use a HAL ST-6000 but there are many other converter types that will work. The converter then converts the tones into mark-space DC impulses to actuate the Model 15 TTY machine. It's that simple.

Most larger Australian post offices were equipped with these Teletypes, or similar, for telegraph traffic. It's said that they were remaindered from WW2 after the US forces left. They were also used for press releases during the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. I was a mail sorter who learned to type on them. When I left the Postal service in 1972 they were just starting to be phased out in favour of newer Siemens machines, but the arrival of fax technology spelt the end of telegraph altogether. Seems impossible to find a Teletype in Australia now, certainly one in working order.

A teletypewriter might be still cool, if you connected it up to a cell phone interface, your cell phone was left plugged in and on, and all your SMS messages were dumped out to the teletypewriter. If not a cellphone, then a low powered thin client running an linux text line IM client (not as cool, but way easier to do -- just log in with the the teletype writer to your linux box on the command line, and run the command line IM client and leave it all on :-/).

In 1963, Teletypes (and eventually generic copies of them) using 8-level ASCII code, 120 wpm (defining "word" as 5 characters) as compared to 13, no case shifting, upper and lower case, many more punctuation symbols, was introduced. However, their first use was as console devices for minicomputers (smaller and simpler than mainframes) and over dialup lines to access time sharing services; Telex, the major network of teleprinters used for telegrams, kept the old systems for compatibility. Eventually, the internet replaced the telegraph network, which is only used for cash-to-cash money transfers today (when one party has no bank account, or the sender wants to avoid bank transfers for some reason). But even in the 1970s, airline reservation computers still had to communicate with Telex machines in locations not reachable by higher speed telephone lines (leased or dialup), such as Caribbean islands and developing countries. Top of the line mainframe computers sending messages to old style teleprinters!

It should be quite easy to achieve. You just have to use older phone with rs232 interface, which can be controlled with Hayes AT commands. You need also level shifter from rs232 to TTL. Then you have to set up some MCU in order to format flowing data and translate characters from Baudot code to ASCII and vice versa. Most difficult part will be an interface between TTL logic and current loop used by vintage teletypes.

I recently got one too, but mine needs repair or probably just a good cleaning. Here's an idea, why not take a video of someone typing at your teletype, then connect a switch to a PC that is ready to play this video and output sample data to your teletype when that someone in the video presses a key. It needs 60mA current loop at 150 baud (I think). I'll try to contact you offline.

Are paper and ribbons still readily available?
@markhall7646
@markhall7646 7 жыл бұрын
You bet. Standard ribbons for a typewriter work, but you have to tie knots at the ends or add eyelets to make the machines reverse the ribbon. The original TTY ribbons were inked heavier than standard typewriter, so typewriter ribbons will give you less mileage. Upside to them is you can still get the kewl purple ink ones. If you get NOS ribbons with the metal reels they can be "freshened" with WD-40 or re-inked. Messy, but fun... Paper is still available, kind of a spendy proposition for a single roll, better by the case of 12 though. Like toilet paper, it's better to have spare rolls than to be stranded with just a core...!
