Omane ofui! These things happened during the military regime not democratic regime. And there was a good reason why it happened. It did not happen to just Ashanti women, the makola women had their fair share. JJ lives in Accra at the time, how would he know what is happening in Kumasi? There was no mobile phones then. There was just one black and white TV station and telephone landlines was a luxury. There was only GBC 1,2 and 3 at the time. No FM radio stations. In Any case Boakye Djan and Baah Acheamfuor were coleaders of the coup and they hail from Ashanti, why did they not stop it. You speak as if JJ came there with his boys to visit mayhem on the Ashanti women. Gyimmii. Now for all those who were not born then or were to young,listen up: During Acheapong's time, some women were deliberately hoarding food to create artificial shortages. These artificial shortages caused price hikes in basic commodities. These artificial shortages and the resulting price hikes caused untold hardships on the people. This made Acheampong's government unpopular. I believe this is one reason that led to Acheampong's overthrow. Akuffu took over. The situation remained pretty much the same. All these hardships and suffering made JJ and his men take over. At this stage, the system was nearly collapsing so something drastic had to be done in order to check the system. This was why the angry soldiers had to result to that. I was like 12 years old then. The soldiers put the fear of the lord in the ' kalabule' women so as to check the system. The kalabule women that is those who were hoarding the commodities and selling them at cut throat prices so as to cause high inflation and instability were the ones who got punished. Of course sometimes a few innocent women will be involved just like how some innocent civilians and soldiers paid a hard price. But such is life! I didn't see with my own eyes any woman being caned though but I heard. Just rumors. I don't think Omane even saw any. I don't think he was even born by then.
