Undervolting is actually much healthier than stock. I'm still using a 1080 ti and in summer temps increase as high as 80 degrees with 50% fan. Undervolting my 1080 ti went from 80 degrees to low 60s with the same fan speed settings 50%. Sacrificing 2-3fps for almost 20 degrees cooler.

That is actually surprisingly significant - to the extent that its like overclocking old cars from era like 980 and r9290. When you overclock something like the 2070super, even with something crazy like 2055mhz target & +1200mhz memory (functional, not just no artifacting but ECC) its like 6-11 fps depending. This is anywhere from 10 to 25. Guess thats what an almost 300mhz core increase will do for you on top of a 900mhz memory. Its actually impressive the extra value. But i wouldnt be able to deal with all that fan noise. Id rather undervolt and hit somrwhere above stock clocks still & same memory oc, but keep it same temp as stock or 10-20c cooler.

If you care about the power draw increase, then don't overclock it. A stock 4090 uses less power then a stock 3090ti, like the 4090 litterly uses 400 watt at max. It's insane.

Clearly the stock RTX 4090 does not reach such a high TDP, it rarely or infrequently reaches 400W, but the OC version of the RTX 4090 does reach 520W which translates into a very proportional increase in performance.

@@luukherfst1209 In some scenes the power draw in increased by roughly 50% for a 10% improvement in performance which is a pretty bad tradeoff to be honest. Even if the gpu can handle the heat it will also make the air temperature inside your computer rise quickly which can affect other parts too. Especially m2 ssd's which are very temperature sensitive.

Something does not add up, I use msi gaming x trio 4090 and I can overclock to 3105 and plus 1500 on men and yet my gains are wayyyy less. I am currently using a 5900x though so I wonder if even at 4k the cpu is playing a role on frame rate limitation. Either that or the clock speed really plays a smaller role because I can get that clock at way less than 500w, more like 460 max. Msi card only has 3 8 pin adapter as well, I wonder if the gpu knows it’s power limited by that and thus it wont push the wattage. Hmmm

@@kellen4854 i swapped out the 5900x for a 5800x 3d the day after I posted this and noticed a couple of small changes at 4k, there was a section in plague tale requiem where I would drop down to 45fps and the gpu would drop to around 40 percent usage, in that exact spot I now get around 80 fps and about 75 to 80 percent gpu usage so I was quite surprised about that but there is clearly still some cpu headroom to gain for sure, Besides that I’ve not noticed any more difference at 4k. I did a test at 1440p on shadow of the tomb raider to see if there was an uplift, in the benchmark with 5900x I would get 207fps average with max settings and no RT, with the 5800x 3d the same test I get 273fps…. So there is certainly an improvement. At 4k in the test there is 1 fps difference between the two processors but the lows on the 5800x 3d have doubled. I think I’m happy enough for now and will see what the 7000 x3d chips can do before thinking about platform upgrade.

Recently watched a clip discussing teh 4090's premium cooler designs vs The nvdia stock. It stated that at best you will only see a 15 to 45Mhz boost on the clock on the premium cards, and pay anywhere from 245 to 500 dollars for it. With the OC they already have an O'ver C'lock built in the head room isnt much on OC cards. At least from my understanding and having owned only one 3000 series OC card.

ive got a gigabyte 4090 myself and have to say that there is OC headroom left. I managed to get my Stock OC Model 2760 mhz to 3000 mhz at 1.05v curve optimizer without upping the Power Limit. In some Really demanding Games it will need more than around 430-440 Watts and down clock to around 2950 mhz to stay in the power limit.
