Really enjoyed this, Ruairi! It's fascinating to see the history of the bodhrán & how it has developed & progressed. I bought my daughter a bodhrán a couple of years ago, when she moved to Belfast & she loves playing it. I treated myself to one a few months ago - I really need to knuckle down to your lessons! 😊

Ruairi, I recognized myself (plaid shirt) in the photo with Charlie. I had Peggy take the photo and then I took the one you show of the two of them. I’ll never forget the amazing experience I had buying my Bodhran from Charlie and Peggy. Because of the black and white Belgium goat skin, I Christine’s it, “the Dalmation.” You also show a photo of Charlie possibly playing The Dalmation.

@@hooleyon wonderful! That’s incredible that you found the film, only to find yourself in it! Hope you still have your Charlie Byrne drums - they are precious!

There was a bodhran festival years ago in Kerry, mill town, castle Maine, I have shown people how to play, some people are extremely quick at learning, with just a few hours training you could be good enough to be playing with professional musicians in a traditional session, brilliant instrument I was told, bodhran originated from North Africa, I don’t know how true that is.

I like how you included the lambeg. The lambeg has been used by both the Orange + Hibernian Orders. Its also an Irish drum.

The background music is brilliant, any chance of a playlist? Especially, who's playing "the gael" last mohicans?

Thank you for the kind words! I'm really glad you enjoyed the Gael - I actually arranged a couple of tracks around it ( jig and reel time) especially for the doc, and the very brilliant John Dipper is playing fiddle's on it.. hopefully I'll release at some point in the future

I hope you again come to Assam state in India to discover and wonder it's rich music both traditional and folk. We are rich classical elements of the traditional music culture. Lack of importance by the new generation is resulting in killing these old cultures and traditions. If you could have visited here and express our rich heritage to the world then we would be oblique and glad towards you

@@bodhran I had a look to all your videos and felt in love with the bodhran. Thanks for doing them. I’ll certainly buy your two courses for beginners and intermediate. The most difficult part is now to find a good and well priced instrument in my country, without trying it before buy.

It seems that rather than being 'traditional', used back through time, the drum was invented in the 1950s? Before that similar were played but they were tambourines and 'dishes' made from wood and skins and appropriated as drums beaten with the hand by wren boys and similar? What's Irish about it?
