Alan and Paul could never have sung together. Alan cannot sing falsetto. He has never sang Sugar Baby Love without help . Paul DaVinci would have to front the Rubettes and sing live. Alan can't sing the songs Paul does and Paul wouldn't sing the drivel that Alan can sing. Paul could have done Sugar Baby Love and Tonight without help. He would not want to sing along with Alan's dubbed falsetto or weak voice. So, if not for the contract with Penny Farthing records, Paul DaVinci would have fronted the group. No Alan. No way. The reason there are 2 groups of Rubettes is Alan had several members join Paul DaVinci's lineup and other backup singers and musicians joined Alan and probably actually do the high notes on Tonight and Sugar Baby Love. Alan is no longer using Paul's voice. He was banned from miming Paul in 1983- 86 onward and Paul re-recorded Sugar Baby Love. Of course the pre- ,83 videos are already made, and they are still on U Tube. No, Alan knows he can't sing falsetto and Paul still does. They could never have been in the same band.

I'm sorry for the confusion, but for the record this footage is of me Paul Da Vinci miming to my original vocal on the record "Sugar Baby Love" by The Rubettes with The Rubettes featuring Bill Hurd. I would have preferred to sing it live which I still do regularly on my solo shows. Alan Williams did not perform on any part of this original recording (which was number one all over Europe) but did perform on their subsequent hits.

i heard that Paul let The Rubettes down at the last minute and they had to get someone to replace him and thats when Alan came in, it was something to do with Paul joining another record company and going solo, he probably had regrets after that especially when The Rubettes carried on making great songs and Alan being the lead singer on every other record.

The track with Pauls voice was sent out as a demo to bands such as showaddywaddy and was not meant to be put out. However, as he didn't think that his version would be released, he signed a record contract with penny farthing records. After some months, Pauls version was released under a different band name and Alan mimed his vocals when it reached number one in may and some of June 1974. So Paul didn't let the rubbettes down, the rubettes let him down.

Just imagine: session-singers only got paid for their days work then! So, despite him still being a bit disgruntled about it, this song probably still pays some of his bills.

Joanne, it's not a matter if he can sing it of not, it's the fact that for far too long people were deceived into believing that the Rubettes with Alan sang their only number one hit single. It was Paul Da Vinci who sang the entire lead. Alan Williams continues to lie when interviewed how he "helped record this song" when Paul has revealed that he wasn't even in the recording studio.

So so many people seem to be under the impression the Paul didn't want to join the Rubettes. That just isn't true at all, and I feel as though this is the work of those die hard Alan Williams fans trying to spread more rubbish among those who aren't aware of the truth. Paul da Vinci signed a record contract with Pye Records before recording Sugar Baby Love. I believe he was actually asked by the producers the night they recorded the record if he'd like to be involved in a future project, but he had to decline due to this other contract. A record contract is a legally binding document! Therefore, Paul legally couldn't join the Rubettes until his contract with Pye expired (probably 3-5 years). So no, it isn't because Paul didn't want to join the band, it's because he legally couldn't! For goodness sake, read about it before commenting and spreading trash!

Yes, Paul Da Vinci is the REAL original singer, who in this century hardly sings it in A major, you can see from another YT videos. This is lipsync and original recording of 1973, in C major. Old man Alan Williams sings it in Bb major (Les Rubettes - Sugar baby love en LIVE- Amiens 31 août 2013)

@@rw8733 Paul da V was only a session singer doing lead vocals on that recording. He was never in the band. It happened a lot in the seventies. Paul was just a hired gun for the day and they got the credit. I don't think Paul even gets royalties for it. It is criminally unfair.
