Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a 2023 American computer-animated action-comedy film[5] produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. It was directed by Kirk DeMicco, co-directed by Faryn Pearl, and written by Pam Brady and the writing team of Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi. The film stars the voices of Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Annie Murphy, Colman Domingo, and Jane Fonda, with Sam Richardson, Liza Koshy, Will Forte, Jaboukie Young-White, Blue Chapman, Ramona Young, and Eduardo Franco being featured in the supporting roles. The film follows a shy but kind 15-year-old girl named Ruby Gillman (Condor) who is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but when she went into the ocean by breaking her mother's (Collette) rule with any would-be friends, she discovers that she is a direct descendant of battle-hardened krakens who have protected the land and sea from evil mermaids for generations, and is also destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas (Fonda).
The film was first pitched to DreamWorks Animation by Brown and DiGuiseppi, and had been in the works for several years. It was announced in June 2021 as its original title Meet the Gillmans, with casting taking place to play the role and an expected release year of 2022. Paul Tibbitt came on board to direct, with Brady signing on to write with Brown and DiGuiseppi, and production was expected to start in 2022. The majority of the voice cast members were announced in March 2023, along with DeMicco replacing Tibbitt as director. The film draws inspiration from Easy A (2010), Lady Bird (2017), and Booksmart (2019), and the different John Hughes films. The musical score was composed by Stephanie Economou, in addition to two original songs performed by British singer-songwriters Mimi Webb and Freya Ridings.

@@shiroamakusa8075 Sorry, but I still enjoy Lord of the Rings to this day. Comparing this movie to Lord of the Rings, from their releases, is undeniably unfair. Given how popular Lord of the Rings was before it became a movie. Ruby Gillman had no massive fan base before it was made, even if it did it was too small and unnoticeable. Lord of the Rings sold so many books, people fell in love with the stories it told, and it became popular before it became a movie. That’s why it was successful, people will forever love the original 3 movies. Can’t say the same for the newer movies, but to each their own. Things change when people change someone else’s fantasy world to fit their own vision, rather than staying true to the original creators visions. Look towards the Star Wars Sequel trilogy books vs Disney movie reception. The books were received far better than the movies. The point is everyone knew the story of Lord of the Rings and were so excited to see it theatrically presented. No one knew the story of Ruby Gillman until we watched the trailer that basically spoiled everything about it. Can’t build up love and affection for a character if you already know the development without watching them grow. Lord of the Rings you watch as a group who had no interest working together, bond over an adventure that put all of their lives in mortal danger, and grow stronger as they work together to destroy the evil that nearly took over their world. Ruby Gillman you watch a Teenage Kraken fake being human in a world where people are too dumb to tell she’s not human. She tries to act human, fails, replace female’s period with kraken growth jokes, learns about her Kraken powers, finds mermaid “friend”, love interest takes sideline most of the movie while she tries to learn how to fit in, mermaid “friend” makes proposition to stop mermaid/kraken war that supposedly would keep them from hanging out so she can teach her how to fit in, young Kraken Ruby listens and learns how to use her Kraken powers for the first time ever, she finally succeeds, gets betrayed obviously, and somehow overpowered the mermaid who’s been overpowered by a magical trident. I got all that from the trailer never watch the movie and only barely skimmed this video.

I think a better ending would be Chelsea actually being the daughter of Nerissa and she still betrays Ruby but not because "I'm evil bwahaha" but to get revenge on Ruby's mom for killing Nerissa. I also think it would've been better for Ruby's mom to have actually killed Nerissa, maybe even in front of Chelsea, hence why she's so ashamed of her past and hides it from Ruby. Than in the final confrontation, Chelsea realizes she's about to kill Ruby's mom in front of her, except Chelsea actually cares for Ruby and has grown to appreciate her. Than Chelsea stops the attack to continue being friends with Ruby. I know my version may not be perfect but I do think it would be better than this version we got.

If the climax was different here's how I imagine it though it will remind a lot of people of the film Turning Red. Ruby ditches her dinner with her family and goes to prom which is happening at the boat which pissed off Ruby's mom Agatha and Agatha blinded by her rage turns into a giant kraken and goes after Ruby. After Ruby apologizes to her friends and asking Connor to go to prom together they all have a wonderful time and Chelsea/Nerrisa if she's not the main antagonist seeing the impending situation quickly swims to the prom boat to warn Ruby but before she finishes talking Agatha reaches the boat and is about to grab Ruby. Upon grabbing Ruby, all her friends including Chelsea screamed telling Agatha to put her down. Then without thinking she grabs the boat and takes it to the dock where she dumps all the students out telling them to go home. Many run home while some decided to stay and take cover. Ruby and Chelsea decide to work together and bring the situation under control. Ruby heads back to the ocean to retrieve the trident with Chelsea helping her out. When the fight reaches it's peak with Agatha being knocked out, the only way to save her is to destroy the trident due to the fact that Agatha chose to keep the trident safe instead of destroying it which kept bothering her in which Ruby and Chelsea in her giant mermaid form upon holding the trident Chelsea throws the trident in the air and Ruby uses her laser eyes with the help from Ruby's grandma destroy the trident which casts a beam at Agatha and revives her. In the end Ruby and Chelsea hug each other setting a new and brighter future for Mermaids and Krakens.
