Grandpa had a Ruby. I never had a problem stripping it. I would sit at the dining room table & take it apart until Grandma yelled at me to put it away so we could eat. Good times, thanks for the reminder!

Never had a Ruby, never interested in the Ruby, and didn't even watch the Ruby, Ruby, Ruby episode, but I'm somehow interested in this one. Maybe I'm just a mechanical geek and like seeing how a pistol is put together and gives an idea of how manufacturing and design were like over 100 years ago.

Still what a wonderfully simple design the Ruby is. Contemporary pistols were so complicated or horrendously unreliable, many of them.

I can only assume that, most of the time, the inability to properly field strip a certain percentage of Rubies didn't matter. They'd either sit on the hip of some officer or HMG crewman who was highly unlikely to fire so much as a full magazine from it before either being rotated to the rear, or made a casualty by artillery, or they'd go forward and, ninety something percent of the time, be damaged beyond repair, lost in the muck, or expended along with the soldier carrying it before this became an issue. And if the Ruby did last long enough for that to become a problem, and the soldier survived discovering so, then it clearly required armorer level repair, turn it in, get issued a replacement from the pool, and let them deal with fixing it. (Please ignore that you turned in your "new" pistol to them last week with the same problem)

The pistols were made on a rush basis, and as you allude it is possible disassembly was not part of the inspection process. A 3rd option for the more skilled past simply bobbing the hammer round is fill in the sear notch with a Tig welder, then re-cut the sear notch in the proper position. :)
@thebotrchap

Making a new taller sear is also relatively easy 😉 🤫

A 4th option (that requires a little less skill) you could silver solder (or brase) a small piece of steel into the sear notch.

I'm amazed you did the effort to build that device. Well done, fun to watch! I've got a Ruby type in my collection which was stripped and somehow put together by some fool who caused some internal damage to the plunger of the hammer spring and to the main spring. I had some problems stripping to rebuild it correctly but finally I was successful. At least it was cheap at 30€. :-)

I guess someone likes ruby type pistols and why not. Having a slight interference between the hammer and slide assuming the slide can still return does slow down the cycling a bit to allow more time for a weak magazine follower spring to position the next round for feeding. I have seen an AK that had the hammer riding up a little too high. Happens with replacement parts mandated by US 922r requirements for no more than 10 foreign parts in an imported semiautomatic rifle that is not deemed suitable for sporting purposes by our government.

That‘s why I have the press 😅 There’s no trick to it. You could use a wooden vice or metal vice with soft jaws. I’ve done it my simply using my bodyweight pressing the pistol against my workbench. What really helps is having someone there to insert a rod/drift/drill bit in where the mag catch axis pin should go as soon as the hole in the mag catch lines up with the holes in the frame. You can then relax the pressure a bit and tap in the axis pin from one side of the frame and whatever temporary pin you’ve put in there will be tapped out.
