@Nigel Buckham I commuted on bicycle for years, the cyclist here was genuinely at fault. Yes, the driver could and should have been more cautious when approaching this junction, ESPECIALLY if he was local and knew that the path crossing the road was a mixed use path and thus cyclists may be crossing at speed without slowing as they should. However, regardless of how poorly the driver judged the approach to the junction, he WAS slowing to stop, where as the cyclist clearly didn’t slow when approaching the crossing at all, thus caused the collision… This was purely an incident created by a cyclist not wanting to slow or stop because of the effort it takes to do so, and just careened ahead without observations till it was too late. Having commuted by bike A LOT myself, i know just how exhausting, annoying and frustrating it is to use a shared footpath such as this and be forced to slow/stop reguarly in order to cross the toad, which is exactly why i often would cycle in the road instead of on half arsed cycling infrastructure such as this, as it meant i could keep a more average cycling pace i stead of having to stop/start all the time which really does start to exhaust the legs. Even more so when you’re commuting 30 miles each way, every day… Seriously, that’s why so many serious commuters still use roads, and not these cycle paths that are integrated into pavements which do not provide priority are road crossings, because they/we all HATE having to stop/start all the time. Not to mention that riding a smooth/consistent road surface is far less painful to a cyclists ass than having to ride over dropped curbs relentlessly, it’s like hitting a speed bump at too great of a speed and just sends a jarring thwack through you EVERY time… And when your legs are already tired, you don’t always have the wherewithall or physical ability to stand enough to lift your ass off the seat each and every time

That was the old rule. This is one aspect of the recent changes to the Highway Code that really is a new rule. Rule H3, the cyclist has right of way here. As would a pedestrian wishing to cross. The car driver approaches way too fast to deal with the possibility of a vulnerable road user legally crossing the junction.

#4 I've experienced a few instances like this but not to the same, extreme extent. Sometimes you're on cruise control going down the motorway and you encounter someone who is going slower so you pull out to overtake and they speed up so you put the cruise control up a couple of clicks to facilitate the pass and they just match your speed until you're either forced to put the hammer down and try to gap them or drop back in behind them where they proceed to slow down below the original speed you were travelling when you tried to overtake. I just don't get it, is it so hard to maintain a steady speed?

@@jhareng no ive seen loads of kids do it and have had a lad in work admit to doing it. Theyre taking the piss. They know that lorries and alot of vans are restricted so the joke is to go slow enough so that one starts to overtake. You then speed up until they have to pull back in again. Then you wait a minute then slow again. Once they start to overtake you again you speed up again. Keep doing it until they get bored of trying, have a tantrum and start flashing or until your turning comes up. Whichever comes sooner. Not a very funny joke but more kids seem to be dead heads and obsessed with "pranking" these days!

2:07 - I find this happens so often when driving in England. It's like people don't want to drive quickly, but also have a problem when you want to overtake. I put the cruise control to 70, and then someone else keeps going faster and slower whenever you try to overtake. In a road as empty as that, your best option to just stay in the overtake lane. At the very least it will force him to stay at the same speed.
@MrKeefy

I cruise at 60 and happens all the time too. I'm going 2 or 3 MPH faster pullout and they then speed up. Another is overtaking me then pulling in front of me and then braking when there's bugger all behind me for hundred metres or more. Its not like They brake checked me, just put brakes on to not run into car in front of them. Happens mostly when a junction is coming up.

Tuesday morning. Wem - Shrewsbury road. Just past Harmer hill Infront is a 22 plate silver Volvo. The speed is about 45-50mph(national speed limit ). A fiesta behind me indicated he was going to overtake. The Volvo floored it and the Fiesta managed to pull in front of him a nanosecond before a head-on collision half a mile down the road. At this point I was far behind and expected a bad crash. Drivers like the one in the Volvo should be permanently banned ever sitting behind the wheel.

At 1:28, driver was looking into low sun, so vision compromised. Cyclist must have seen driver slowing for the Give Way, which would mean that unless there was a SECOND car coming, there'd be a safe gap behind cammer in which to cross the road. Cyclists ALWAYS blame the driver; this new Highway Code hierarchy merely gives them greater licence to do so. @@ghostofsosaria7534 I never said that the cyclist should not have stopped, I was highlighting that the cycle lane is badly designed. Unlike on the roads there is no prior warning that you are approaching a junction, no give way sign on a post, just a bit of paint which is where you need to stop, if it's a long stretch of downhill, with some long grass and some bushes it can be difficult to see the junction in time to stop for it, by the time you see it it's too late to brake. In this instance, the cyclist should have stopped, the crash is the cyclists fault (if he has home contents insurance then he'll be covered under the public liability section so the driver won't be out of pocket) but the cyclist has been put in a very poor situation by the crappy cycle lane.

Zero stars on an NCAP rating is meaningless. No electronic traction control? Remove a star No electronic stability control? Remove a star? Less than 30 airbags, .... you get the idea. It is quite feasible that cars with excellent safety cells and other good design features can recieve zero stars. Especially at the lower end of model ranges where pennies matter and paying extra for unwanted and perhaps never needed features such as traction control puts off the customer. The Panda may not even have been tested, it may have been decided to be similar enough in basic structure to another model, yet may contain safety improvements over that model, no ignition key on the steering wheel, extra airbags, softer plastics etc.

Yes put an Automatic in to Park when you are leaving your car. But not a manual. I don’t know who your instructor is, but I would never instruct anyone to leave a manual car in gear, should always be left in neutral, the handbrake should be enough to hold the car still, if not get it maintained.

@@fuzzy-daddy83 I found out recently that with an automatic you should put it into Neutral, apply the handbrake and take your foot of the brake (the vehicle will move slightly as the vehicle weight is transferred onto the handbrake (and off the gearbox)), then put it into Park. Really? 2:58 Not at all baffling, it is quite normal for people to drive at constant throttle rather than constant speed, or to not pay attention to speed, other traffic, etc 7:24 Some of the symptoms of road rage include following too close (you do), unnecessary and aggressive use of the horn (you do), sudden lane changes with no warning (you do) making use of lanes you should not (you do) You certainly seem to suffer road rage, and can never be certain if you cause it in others or not. Even with the rule changes, a car doesn’t HAVE to, just SHOULD. I don’t think the rules themselves are stupid, but what is really stupid in the UK is the infrastructure… A lot of these collisions could be avoided by very minor road/road-marking redesigns. Put a zebra/paralllel crossing there to make it visible the crossee has priority, would be a good example, especially on problem junctions like this, which i can imagine this would not be the first collision of this kind. As for blame here, whether with the new tules or the old rules, both the driver and the cyclist did many things wrong each and both could have better mitigated this issue, however, only the cyclist is actually at fault here, even under the new rules.

The biggest one is when the speed limit drops to 50mph, almost every time you wind up with a lorry driving a foot away from your arse, just because they can go faster than 50 they do. Those speed limits for roadworks etc should be lifted to 60mph from 50mph imo as it's such a common problem with these drivers tailgating drivers who adhere to the limits. clip #3: This Proves how many people have read the highway code updates not just here in the comments but as a driver submitting his clip also. The cycle lane may not go over the junction however t he highway code changed to give pedestrians and cyclists better safety. They have right of way at all junctions now if they are waiting to cross so I'm this instance the driver is in the wrong, he should have stopped and let the cyclist past. It's the same on the exit or entrance of a roundabout aswell. Pedestrians have priority just like a zebra crossing. For clarity, this is rule 8 of the highway code. Vehicles should give way. The fact he didn't means he is liable for driving without due care and attention :)
@myworldntl
@myworldntl 2 жыл бұрын
Too many people are incorrectly misinterpreting either rule H2 or rule H3 in the highway code changes. Rule H3 affords cyclists and horse riders etc, the road priority that they “already have” when they are already in the road or a priority lane which provides priority to those already travelling straight ahead. Rule H2 (which is in play at junctions such as this) os a “should” not a “must” and means you “should” give way to peds/cyclists waiting to cross, it doesn’t mean you’re at fault when you correctly slow and stop at a give way marker and have a cyclist you can’t see due ti lighting condition, pay absolutely not attention and careen into you as they do not make a single attempt to slow down and cross the road safely… H2 does not give peds or cyclists carte blanche priority at crossings like this, this is only provided at junctions which have been designed to provide priority to the crossees (pelican/toucan/zebra etc crossings, or specific cycle lane crossings where the give way demarcation is BEFORE the cycle lane (which would then actually mean rule H3 is in effect). In this video and at this junction only rule H2 is in effect, meaning if someone is waiting to cross or if you see someone approaching about about to cross, then you “should” give way to them, but not “must” as it is not a legal requirement. The real issue with this particular incident, isn’t the application of or lack of application of rule H2 but rather. • The junction terminates at a 40mph road, meaning drivers will be approaching at speed • the lighting is very poor and even after watching dozens of times, i still do not see the cyclist till JUST before impact, and can be pretty certain the driver didn’t either • regardless, the driver approached with too much speed, but even if he had slowed a little more, the speed at which the cyclist was approaching would still have caused a collision. • the cyclist obviously didn’t look right, as given where the sun was, he WOULD NOT have had the sun in his eyes and would have been able to clearly see the car approaching at speed • the cyclist after failing to perform adequate observations (or at least, reacting correctly to adequate observations) completely failed to slow and prepare to stop at a non-priority/mandatory crossing and thus the cyclist collided with the car, the car did not collied with the cyclist. Both were very much a but stupid here, but, i’ve been that cyclist before and fuck me seriously, you do NOT cross a road like that if you want to get hone without having a accident… If we wants to ride like that, he should love off the shared use footway and into the road and use the road as a road user, as then he doesn’t have to stop at these side roads, just like a car wouldn’t have to… I would speculate, due to the way he crossed this road without slowing, that he’s likely ran a few red lights on his bike as well… I can honestly say, for the 18 months i commute using my bike, i never once ran a red light. And after 3 days if using shared use bike lanes, i stopped using them an instead used the road as i was able to more safely maintain a better and safer average speed…

Also, it does this as it’s a pavement that has been converted to shared use without any modification besides some signs and some paint on the pavement indicating it’s shared use. @myworldntl
@myworldntl 2 жыл бұрын
They could easily convert this properly though just be redesigning the junction for minimal cost. For example, add a proper parallel crossing which would clearly indicate that the crossee has priority, and/or receed the junction allowing for the giveway demarkation to be before the crossing, not after it. I can imagine this is not the first collision at this junction, at what point is it more cost efficient to just pay some money to redesign it properly i ask?

Going forward and on the back of the new highway code you're going to see more Dutch junctions and roundabouts where cyclists do have right of way. We might as well all start practicing this now.

#4 Things that get on my nerves the most about motorway driving 1. People who drive like this in clip 4 2. Middle/Outside lane hoggers 3. Lorry drivers who think the 50mph average speed limit isn't for them, get right up your backside and appear very angry that your sticking to 50 🤔

3 - more proof cyclists will not* stop no matter what. Approaching a junction surely slow down and be ready to stop like a car?

#4 I cannot fathom why the cammer chose to stay glued to the back of the errant Audi. Was he just not able to engage his brain and think it might be better to change lanes?

Great to see a police vehicle in the right place to stop a cyclist. They are so often a menace and generally get clean away.
