Alexander Krestan a Scarlet Letter is, basically, a big A made in dark red (scarlet) fabric and attached on someone's clothes, just like the Jewish Star on a Jew's clothes during WWII, that meaned that the person had committed adultery (had cheated on her husband, or his wife, but they was mostrly women). This was pretty common I think during the 17th century in England.
