So beautiful in Giselle. Fonteyn expresses such emotion with so little effort-that is genius. and not seen today.

They danced Giselle at Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, 1965. I got standing room in the stalls. The most expensive ticket I have ever bought. Worth its weight in gold. I have never ever seen a Giselle to match that performance. I was 16. A good copy in black and white of a complete performance, or those BBC snippets of that 2nd Act would calm my anxiety. But the mad scene was to die for. Margot was at the heights of her powers. By 1972 we were friends. I would look out for her during two tours back in Argentina. ♥️

Fonteyn had to be technically brilliant to keep up with Nureyev ! It's rubbish to suggest otherwise. They were an incredible pairing. coraclewoman

She was just as "stoic" as he was....but, even with the age difference,,,,,,,they eluded sexual tension.....nondescript......I personally think it was in their expressions and facial features......they were so "opposite" in looks.....etc.......her control and her gorgeous arms, hands and fingers....so lovely when she wrapped them around his head, shoulders, etc...

@felixdevilliers1 Thank you for saying this, you're absolutely right, in my opinion! There are technically brilliant dancers today who do not have the soul Margot Fonteyn had when she was dancing.

Who the hell thinks of technical brilliance - such a clichè, one of thos things one says - when seeing pure poetry. But she, English trained, had a small scale technique which even Makarova says she found it hard sometimes to emulate.Makarova wass thinking of expression, not technique when she referred to Fonteyn as legendary in the Sleeping Beauty. Thereis something that comes from within which no one can emulate.

Woops! Be careful with your spelling of their names. When Rudolf wrote his autograph in my autograph book in 1973, and in my copy of his autobiography in 1982, he spelt his name with an 'f' at the end, not 'ph'. Similarly, Margot. when signing her name in my copy of her autobiography, wrote 'Fonteyn' - no 'e' at the end. Thanks.
