Here's how I would have fixed a few things in this special: 1. Not make it. 2. If I HAD to, I'd change the following (for starters): instead of Elf Dentist Academy, have Hermey be the only elf in attendance at some polar dentist school. That would make more sense. Also, when the Head Elf confronts him later, have him say, "so, how's the dentist profession?" and Hermey says, "wonderful, couldn't be better." "Y'know, we sure miss you 'round the toy shop." "You do?" "yes, 'cause you left my staff an elf short!" Hermey: "That reminds me, you missed your last appointment." Head Elf: "I was busy!"

What irks me most about this is Rick Moranis rarely takes roles anymore since the 90s. This is due to his wife dying and wanting to focus on taking care of their kids. Actually, as I understand it, part of the reason Rankin Bass “de-aged” Rudolph between specials, had to do with the fact that the original puppets from the very first Rudolph specials were all stolen between productions. Honestly, I really want a Rudolph sequel that has a similar premise to this. It's been several years since Rudolph did the thing in the first movie and now he's famous... but with that fame comes people constantly badgering him to give autographs and do tricks with his nose. He eventually gets sick of their crap and takes off with Hermie (who is now a semi-famous dentist who has to suffer through "elf practice" barbs every day) to the island of the toys once more. They actually don't end up going back because they end up realizing that the only reason the citizens of their former location want them back is because they want to exploit the fame that the two were brought. It's a valuable lesson about how even though being famous sounds like fun and games, there's a darker side that you need to consider.

I always find it weird when some company produces a holiday product without even looking up what reindeer look like. Reindeer don't really look like deer, at all. How do they keep fucking that up? XD
@Keznen7 жыл бұрын
Most popular depictions of Santa’s reindeer look more like Whitetail Deer for some reason. My theory is that they are either Whitetails or a similar looking species. ~ Tass
@EagleTimberWolf6 жыл бұрын
Because according to Bambi's law, any and all animated deer MUST be whitetails even if they're not native to the region in which the story takes place. No exceptions. XD

I think Frozen is the only movie with accurate reindeer.
@Tareltonlives Жыл бұрын
Because the illustrator of the original Rudolph book, Denver Gillen, went to Lincoln Park Zoo for illustration but it had white tailed deer instead of reindeer. And since the test audience was young Barbara May, the author's daughter, and she loved those deer, they made him into a Whitetail. Today the zoo has the nigh-extinct Pere David's Deer or Milu. If she had been a fan of the Field Museum instead they would have gotten it right.
@Keznen Жыл бұрын
@@Tareltonlives Also the Rankin-Bass special was animated in Japan, and the only native deer there is the Sika Deer, so they used that species for reference.

That "We're on the Island of Misfit Toys" song...just, wow. It's like they were going for their own "Merry Old Land of Oz", but instead of whimsically setting the scene and advancing the plot a little through song, they settled for repeating where they are over and over again, while hoping that'll have the same effect.
@Potaogirl-qm3ys4 ай бұрын
Fun fact: The original airing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer didn’t have the scene where Santa picked up the Misfit Toys and was only added in reairings and home video releases. Good job jolly old Saint Prick
@ArendAlphaEagle4 жыл бұрын
You know, I just wondered why this film is subtitled "And the Island of Misfit Toys"? Rudolph and friends already visited that island in the original Rankin/Bass film, and in this film, it's only the central focus of one act. Wouldn't "and the Toy Taker" make more sense, considering that's the film's main antagonist who has presence in all acts?

When I first started watching your reviews, I first heard Shredder's "I hate music" rap in this review around 4:00, and I thought he was saying "It aint music!". I'm guessing Shredder thinks rap isn't real music, and that's why he had a rap number about how he hated music.

While this movie is bad, I don't think it's horrendous. I mean the ending with the girl and the teddy bear was pretty sweet, and The Toy Taker is a pretty sympathetic bad guy played well by Rick Moranis.

Gotta admit, Goodtimes Entertainment must have really liked Rudolph to make not only their own version but also managed to somehow get ahold of the rights to make a sequel to the iconic RANKIN BASS version! Also, props to Scott McNeil for his voice work as he nails the voices of Yukon Cornelius & Hermie! I'd also like to note Kathleen Barr voiced Rudolph in both versions of Rudolph as she voices Rudolph in this one along with Goodtimes theatrical Rudolph movie! It's definitely an interesting bit of history and kinda makes me wonder if they assumed their theatrical film bombed because it wasn't based upon the more iconic Rankin Bass version, hence them making a sequel to the original in the hopes of making bank on the Rankin Bass Rudolph IP! Seems to me they might have gone out of business due to effort & money they must have spent securing the rights to utilize said IP & the money they lost cause the theatrical Rudolph bombed! Still, they got decent voice actors (along with a few big name stars), which is definitely something Goodtimes understood, which could at least pick up some of the slack caused by their somewhat cheap animation! Well, at least they gave us OLD MAN & a follow up to Rankin Bass Rudolph, which actually includes characters from the original special that aren't Rudolph himself or Santa (while Mrs. Claus does appear in some of the other Rankin Bass follow up specials, she has a different design (but then again so does Santa), which is kinda funny to think that Goodtimes got something right that Rankin Bass themselves actually failed to do! However, they still managed to mess it up by getting Rudolph & Clarice's ages wrong (however, I like to think that that may be some sort of magical aspect of them being Christmas Reindeer, like Santa & his wife's immortality, Rudolph's nose, & the Reindeer's ability to fly), though then again the Rankin Bass sequels got that wrong too! Also, at least this film confirms Hermey's bad habit of not amnestizing his patients!
