I have listened to Atwood for more than 70 years, and will NEVER get tired of real Gospel music. The OFRHQ and Dr. Charles Fuller were an amazing part of life in the USA that are woefully missed today.

How wonderful to actually see and hear (through video) this precious man - As a child and young person, I admired his playing and even attempted to play several songs using Rudy's style !! As I was growing up, my parents always kept hymns from Bob Jones University playing in our home - These same style hymns are still played in my home today - Never, never what is considered christian music in today's world !! Thanks so much for this video - I love it !!

Ive loved his piano arrangements since my teacher gave me my first Rudy Atwood book. I vividly remember when I played one of his arrangements for a Sunday evening service. I was a little nervous as I didn't want to mess up. What a blessing his books have been to me over the years. I never can get tired of playing his hymn arrangements. Can't wait to meet him and his family in eternity!!!

I learned many of these arrangements as a teenager. This was the popular “evangelistic style” in the 50s & 60s. When I got to college (70s), my piano professor jumped all over me for playing “too bombastic.” Fortunately, he didn’t exorcise out of me some of Atwood’s best techniques. Fifty-five years later, it dawns on me how much this Christian artist has influenced my piano style over the years. This, however, is the first time I’ve heard him speak, and witness how much he felt the meanings of his songs. Thanks for posting this video. A true historical treasure for those of us closely involved with this man’s music.

What do you consider his best techniques? I’ve loved his playing for years, but have a hard time playing so many octaves so quickly.
@jdavies212msu3 жыл бұрын
@@nicoleduvall851 Yes, his signature octave runs in both hands. I’m lucky with large hands, and grew up in circles of listeners who loved his style. Not so much nowadays. 😉
@nicoleduvall8513 жыл бұрын
@@jdavies212msu I love his style too, and have watched videos of his playing and instruction. I feel like some of his techniques were developed for his radio listeners because it gave them more than what could generally be expected in terms of improvisation. He once commented that a listener told him she could detect a lot of Bach’s influence in his playing. Do you agree with that? I’m not well- versed in Bach so I can’t say for sure. But I do know that I love his playing, and this type of music has sadly gone by the wayside in the average American congregation.
@jdavies212msu3 жыл бұрын
@@nicoleduvall851 I first heard Atwood on radio as a little kid in the 50s. His rendition of “Heavenly Sunshine” opened up every “Old Fashioned Revival Hour” broadcast. As a teen, I later learned to play that arrangement from listening to those broadcasts about a million times. 😂 Yup, it’s gone by the wayside now, but it doesn’t make me sad. I just kind of matter-of-fact accept it as part of getting older. Now, I’m even further removed from those days. I’m attending a rural Thai church of mostly younger people. Not only is there the age difference/generation gap, but a cultural difference too. I bet if I tried an Atwood arrangement on them, I’d just get silent, bewildered stares. 😳. This has helped me accept my lot, and play for enjoyment at home and for the Lord’s ears only, if He’ll have it. 😉

Wow found Rudy Atwood on youtube today, 2/14/22. I heard Rudy in concert in Oakland Bible Church when our son was just 3 years old and sent him to the nursery. He just moved out at age 31 years old as graduate with masters in bioengineering from University of Tokyo, 9/2015. Love your playing and I have a few tapes and piano books but they are too difficult for me. I am a piano teacher to children and young musicians. Bless you!

When I was young, we listened to the Old Fashioned Revival Hour. I had an interest in hymn playing as a very young school boy. Our church pianist, Harvey Argo, imitated the style of Rudy Atwood. Another pianist, Bob Gundry, also played this style.By my high school years, I played from his printed arrangements. Such wonderful memories these are! I'm thankful for the heritage I have from Calvary Baptist Tabernacle in Los Angeles, 104th and Hoover. Rudy played for my parents wedding at CBT, probably about 1940, the marriage of James Houston Morrison and Ruth Gilley, with Pastor Dr. Carl Swazy.

Thank you so much, Aunt Jackie and Uncle Henry. At a time I really needed.. women up from an unsettling dream and after an hour I am still shaking. I wont tell the entire dream, but it was centered around the Royal family. Odd. Huh? Makes me wonder. I was taking care of a baby girl. My heart swelled. When that one went back to her mother halfway into our buggy trip another Baby girl found me. They both lived me and wanted me immediately. at the end of the trip there had been a meal of some sort. Numbers of ppl were there. Some in the family were there, but mainly my immediate family. I remember hugging Louise, Mama, and daddy. I remember that my and daddy's hug lingered. I dont recall seeing his face. One or both of us pulled in again for another hug, which was unusual because we weren't allowed long hugs with daddy. I began to cry as we hugged. I said, see you soon daddy. Then, I found myself hugging Jacky Ayers. That's when I awoke shaking. I have been having anxiety since Vernon abandoned me almost 4 years ago. The dream affected me that way. I am still shaking slightly and feel weird. Wonder what does that all mean, if anything? I have prayed to die , off and on. Mostly when depressed. I suffered deep depression for a year after Vernon left. All alone with no one to see to me or ask about me. Still difficult to keep days straight sometimes. I have been dreaming alot of disturbing dreams for several weeks, now. Sometimes I still otay to die since so many things have been going wrong since Vernon left. I plead for your prayers my sweet Aunt and Uncle. I love you both so, and think of you often. May God extend His hand of grace and mercy. I just thought maybe I shouldnt be sharing in this setting, but what are we for if not to share our problems with those in Christ? Thank you for the beautiful, inspiring, calming music of this man of God. I love you both so much. You both have always been inspiring to me. Take care......I hope you both are doing well.

He can talk? Sorry--my Dad had every OFRH record. I've never heard Rudy speak before. He was an amazing talent--and quite a showman, too. My only "complaint" on the Quartet records was that Rudy often seemed to be competing with the singers, more than accompanying them. Bit too flowery for my taste, but still amazing. Often imitated, never equaled. Thank you for sharing!
