The reason behind this is that these movies set the tone for a lot of generic tropes. American "classics" are quite predictable, always about some hero's journey - And if it's a war movie then your options are even more limited. Making guesswork a lot easier.

Hence why people don't go back to classics as much anymore. I think you're missing out on just as much as I am, we both have equal amounts of time and just allocate it differently. Old movies will be old and eventually take a backseat to everything else that comes after it.
