The only thing Randy did that EVH did was tapping. But the biggest difference was that Randy’s solo style was classically based & Eddies solos were blues based.

they were both great in their respective style, but i have never heard anything close to some of the solos that randy constructed. From start to finish, not only his solos, but his music flows with ease and comprehensiveness that takes you on a journey of guitar bliss. Ever since i first heard randy when i was 10 to this very day, i dont think there are too many guitarists that can match his style.

I’ll be honest, I prefer RR’s solos to EVH’s. The thing about EVH for me are the unbelievable riff… unchained springs to mind as a great example. RR’s solos were epic and for mine more thoughtful. Apples and oranges to me, both tasty, healthy, with a lot in common but distinctive as well.

@@shanewilson199 To me, Eddie is fun party rock, with fun, cool tricks. Randy is a sophisticated musician, pushing boundaries, triple tracking solos, layers and arrangements… And not interested in constantly repeating himself… Which, quite honestly, Eddie, largely did. Eddie is important in the development of rock guitar… Randy was a colossal leap for what rock and metal guitar could be. Eddie is more squeals, these kinds of repeated tapping patterns, and whammy dives… Everything Randy did was very thoughtful, Way more advanced with both the edge of rock guitar, but with a real understanding of theory, and endless options of how to approach and grow as a musician.

Not denying anything Rudy just said, but we all know Randy used tapping techniques and was classically trained just as Eddie was. So there were scales and modes, and techniques they both used that were extremely similar. Randy was able to have a signature sound just as Eddie did. But everybody during that era did. I really miss that era of music where everyone had a unique signature sound. You could listen for seconds and know who the artist was back then. You don’t find that at all anymore.

The difference was Randy could read and write music, whereas Eddie could not. Randy knew different modes and scales, and Eddie played by feel and what sounded good to his ears. Eddie was the first to admit that he didn't know what a scale was. Randy could articulate his playing because he understood music theory and also taught many, many students. Neither was wrong, and they both sounded great with their own sound, but Randy did admit that Eddie was an influence and certainly learned the tapping technique to show to his students when so many of them wanted to learn "Eruption" at the time when it came out and Randy was still teaching

I know Randys said this before in old interviews when he was alive but theres definitely some elements of his solos that are similar to EVH. Obviously the tapping stuff. He taps in Flying High Again most notably, and Crazy Train. He also said his spotlight solo he was forced to do some of the tricks (like tapping) that EVH made popular. I think the riffs werent even close though. Randys riffs and song structure is significantly more sophisticated than Van Halen. I dont know of anything like Diary of a Madman, Revelation (Mother Earth), or Mr. Crowley in the VH catalog. Randys the greatest ever in my opinion.

@@billgerazounis5610 amplifier companies big and small have made billions of dollars marketing or trying to market to sound like EVH. The brown sound is the most coveted and elusive tone to all guitar players worldwide. When's the last time you heard somebody said, God I wish I had Randy rhoads tone!?!? 😂. Randy rhoads probably had the worst guitar sound in the history of rock music. And for that alone my friend shows your ignorance on this topic. And one more point, Eddie had a 50-year music career. Arguably the most accomplished in rock music history. His playing style is also the most influential to this day. I suppose you're one of those guys that thinks Prince can play the guitar well. Lmao

@@freemanmt1 you definitely sound like a guy that doesn’t play guitar, or simply doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about… Lol. When was the last time I heard somebody wants the Randy Rhoads sound??. Is that even a serious question?? Lol. You never heard of the Jackson Randy Rhoads model guitar??. Perhaps the quintessential heavy-metal guitar??. Randy, specifically work with Grover Jackson to design that guitar, and that is the quintessential symbol of heavy-metal guitar playing ever cents. Eddie himself marketed his amps, it wasn’t some quest for his “brown sound”… Lol. whatever that means anyway. It was his own signature amps. His sound was essentially very simple. Secondly, Randy was a far superior composer… Obviously. Whether it be as layered tracking guitars, or his triple tracking of composed guitar solos… Stuff Eddie could never do in his wildest dreams. If you like party rock, with whammy dives, the same kind of repeated tapping , and squeals… That is your guy; if you’re serious musician, and you want a sense of real composition and raising the bar for what rock/heavy metal guitar can be.,Randy is your guy. It’s that simple. Not to mention, Randy only made two albums with Ozzy, and here we are still talking about him…Eddie essentially repeated himself over and over again..the same kind of solos, pretty much literally the same live guitar solo, and never really advanced. Just from blizzard to diary, Randy took a colossal leap as a guitar player. I teach music for a living, and I’m sick of all these amateurs with big opinions, trying to tell me what good guitar playing is… Lol. Yeah, Eddie he had a longer career, because Randy died… Again, is there just air blowing between your ears?. You couldn’t figure even that out?

From what i read Randy Rhoads was asked by the people who were close to Ozzy to play flashy guitar solos like EVH, i don't know who were those people exactly, one thing i know for sure, at that time Ozzy was wasted so the people around him took control over his music, like telling a young guy like Randy the direction of his guitar playing, of course Randy had a different tone and sound but he played fast guitar solos, sometimes with the tapping tech and sometimes with the whammy bar effect, i was very surprised that Rudy Sarzo mentioned Lee Ritenour as someone whom Randy was listening to, as much as i know Randy avoided playing like others since he wanted to play his own style, but he was young and new in the music business and he couldn't say no to the people who gave him orders, thanks for sharing.

Ed liked flash. Randy liked structure. Randy was way different from Ed, Ed was jealous, threatened, Randy was the great new guy. Ed was into the big party Rock star thing, Randy was into music. Eddie was always wasted flashing his tricks. Randy was thinking about structure , interesting music. He was a classical guy. He wanted to teach. Blew his mind when he asked Ed how he stayed in tune and Ed turned away ,didn't say anything.

The one & only technique of Eddie's that Randy picked up on was obviously hammer-ons. Guitarist are going to pick up on new techniques. Unless you live under a rock it's going to happen. Nothing wrong with that because Randy did it his way & there's nothing else lead or rhythm wise you could say he got from Eddie.

there's a video of 15 yr old randy playing hammer-ons so he didn't pick that up from eddie, but there's no doubt some of the techniques that were popular at the time were thanks to eddie.

that is not true Randy was using those long before van Halen, Ed did not invent hammer ons...

Eddie played the same solo every song. He was a one trick pony. Randy was more creative. Schenker is still God. Just sayin

They all essentially play the same 4-5 patterns and licks and those are there go to. It is the way they are put together that counts.First off, I'm a Schenker fanboy so you already won me over. But I see just as much repetition in Randy's lead playing as I do EVH's.

@@Polentaccio you see much repetition in revelation mother earth, diary of a madman, believer, goodbye to Romance, Dee, SATO, over the mountain, etc.? Lol. Literally each song is an event. You sound like you don’t play guitar.

come on I love Randy's playing but Ed's solos did not ever sound the same .....he was not as educated as Randy so sometimes the solos did not always fit the song to my ears. One trick pony I mean don't most guys want to be known for at least one trick? he was famous for something but he brought a lot to the table. Randy at their respecive ages was ahead of Ed in terms of songwriting. Schenker is not on the level of rhoads or Ed

@@Polentaccio Schenker is not on their level, he is good but let's be real. Not the songwriter those guys were. You see repitition in Randy's playing? the guy touched more frets during solos than any guy I have followed Schenker is a box player. Most people will tell you Randy was the most naturally melodic and his solos were a song within the song, there was nothing repititious about his playing nor wiht Ed's do you play guitar?
